MVD for someone young with TN
I have had typical TN for about three years now and am only 22 years old. It was not until four months ago that they found out that my pain was TN so I went through the process of going to my PCP, dentist, and oral surgeon for answers before being diagnosed by my neurologist four months ago.
I have been on three different seizure medicines with not much relief at all and my pain has been getting worse. Two weeks ago i was in the hospital for 8 hours trying to get some sort of pain relief. I have never had pain that severe and I am so afraid of it coming back. I went to my neurosurgeon just last week who had said that yes MVD is probably the way to go but was hesitant because he is not sure that it will be successful because of my age. I was hoping to find out if anyone around my age has had a successful MVD surgery. I am desperate for help and am hopeful that this surgery will work, I just wanted to get others personal stories with the MVD surgery. THANKS!!! |
Mvd
I thought MVD had a higher chance of success with younger people but not for people with ATN or those who had not responded well to medication? What are your symptoms like, sadie324?

Go for it!! As long as you have a good surgeon! I am 30 years old and had MVD when I was 27. My neurosurgeon was hesitant at first too but I could get no pain relief and was so pumped full of Lyrica and Carbatrol that I could barely function! Let me tell you it was the best decision of my life. I wasn't even scared to do it. The morning of the surgery I was like, let's do this! I remember waking up in the recovery room and wanting water so bad because my throat was so dry and of course they can't give it to you but they give you ice chips and it was the first time in a year that I had something in my mouth without having a shooting pain in my face. I just laid there and cried because it had worked. Now the recovery part was a little rough, there was definitely some pain from the surgery and it took a few weeks before I felt back to myself, but I was pain free!
Now that was two years ago and I am now having some twinges again and I am working with my surgeon again to see if we can control it just with meds or if we need to radiate the nerve and be done with it. But I couldn't imagine not have had that surgery. You are far to young to not be living your life to the fullest!!! Go for it!!!! Good luck to you, all the best don't give up! Quote:
