Good bye Tramadol

I posted here before about Tramadol making me have nausea and vomiting.I went to PA today And he said to discontinue it for a while to see if that could be the culprit. I have had these episodes about once a week. I experimented with lower dose of Tramadol and that didn't seem to help.

He did order blood and urine test to see if something else could be cause. It seemed like there was a time lag like tak Tramadol at 7 pm and get sick at 7 am.

Tramadol was sure good for pain relief.

You may be a slow metabolizer of this drug. Hence it may build up in your system unpredictably and that is when you get the side effects. Only a DNA test for Cytochrome P enzymes will reveal that.

I have gone almost a week without Tramadol. No nausea or vomiting episodes. I have been on gabapentin 2700 mg. My pain PA said I am close to my max dose per day. I have managed to get by on this 2700. I think my pain has stabilized. I was used to asking for higher doses every few months.

I reached that level of Gabapentin and then asked to change to Lyrica and have found it is so much better- worth a try for when 2700mg is no use.

I went back to pain PA today. He said I had too high of score on one of my liver elements. I don't know which one. He said it could be the Tramadol. I have appointment with him next month. Anyone ever hear of this?

Do you take Cymbalta too? Cymbalta has liver damage warnings attached to it.

No, don't take Cymbalta. I was wondering how Tramadol could be affecting liver when I had only been on it for 3 months. At times during those three months I was on low dose like 25 to 100 mg per day.

I also think Lyrica is MUCH better than Gabapentin!!! It's pain relief properties are superior to the Gabapentin! I get much more pain relief with the Lyrica and it lasts MUCH longer plus the dosage is of course a lot lower!

I'd recommend Lyrica over Gabapentin any old day! Besides, it doesn't cause the water retention that Gabapentin usually does! At least it's not as severe!

Thanks for mentioning it, Malawigirl08. Take care all. Hugs, Lee

If you have a corresponding loss of liver functions... say from a virus, or hepatitis you don't know you have, or a creeping cirrhosis, tramadol will not be metabolized properly.

The pharmacology sites say some of tramadol is not metabolized anyway and is excreted in the urine unchanged. About 30%.
