Questions about breaking bones...
I have RSD type 1, diagnosed in my left hand and fingers in March 1995. I severed my long and ring fingertips on November 19, 1994. I was a very early case and have had good pain control. Concerning if my foot is broken, I have read that casting should NOT be done, what is a safe way to allow the bone to heal? I fell through a step and my ankle twisted side-ways. It is relentless pain and swelling. I am not sure if there is a fracture or a bad sprain, and will be seeing dr tomorrow: I was wondering about what I should expect. What should I not allow, I learned very quickly ice and rsd sufferers do not mix well. I would appreciate any advice about how best to treat my injured foot. Thanks in advance. Here's hoping for pain-free night and a beautiful day tomorrow.

No Hot and Cold water contrast therapy or aggressive physio either. Physio shuld be intensive, lots of it but gemtle, first sign of rising pain and stop. Everything I have read says casting is bad and can make it spread but don't know why.
If you have a bowl sit with your foot in lukewarm water, gentle massage is also known to help |
When my foot breaks (four times now-go me!), they put me in a cam walker boot! It has air, and it holds the ankle still. It's just like a cast, heavier IMO, and I've never had a problem. My ankle/foot never breaks in the same place twice.
Hope this helps! TK :) |
Oh, and I put ice on the back of my knee. It wasn't on the rsd area and it didn't spread at that time.

Thanks for your replies.
I am in ace bandage and using a cane. All seems to be going well. I appreciate your info it helped me a lot. This is the only time this has happened, I could not imagine doing this three more times. You're a

My daughter was in a cam walker boot, too. It's nice because you can take it off when you're in a "safe" area, and gently move the foot around in ways OKed by your doctor. Then when you're out and around, you can put weight on it and "walk" a bit on it. Also, the liner is washable, which is a plus!
