CRPS and College
I've been in college on and off for YEARS, though previously because of psych problems. Now that those seem mostly under control, this happens.
I'm a good student, but in these past few months it has been harder and harder to study and do my assignments because of the pain. Not to mention the difficulty of paying attention/hiding the pain during class, especially when it spikes. I can already register for next semester, but I hesitate, because I'm worried that I won't be able to handle it. I guess technically if I realize I absolutely can't do it by the time next semester classes start I won't lose any money, but I really don't want that to happen! Anyone out there in a similar situation, or just having some advice about the situation? Luna.Moon |
I've recently started studying one of my old science courses again from my degree, to help with the pain. I find the concentration, although more difficult now, is a good distraction, and pushing myself to do it makes me feel more like my old self.
I would say go for it if you can. The more things you give up, the more time you have to struggle with CRPS. I can't really describe it, but I would say don't give anything up unless it a) makes your condition worse, or b) makes you feel bad about yourself. Some stuff you just can't do.....when that happens, you have to walk away and find an alternative :) Good luck, whatever you decide. Bram. |
On-line courses are out there too if you can type alot without flareups. (I have trouble doing that because of the RSD in my hands.) If you can try going to classes you may be able to get reimbursed for the class if you are only a few weeks in, but check into first. Good Luck and hope you feel better soon.

I hope I at least helped a little. |
Thank you everyone for the advice.
I have decided to finish this semester and am registered for next semester. As one of you said, it can be very helpful for distractions. I am taking a hard course next semester, but I'll just do my best. I am working with the disabilities department, and one of my accommodations is to have a tape recorder in the classroom. This helps for when I am in too much pain to take notes or pay attention. |
Really pleased for you Luna! Good for you :)
The tape recorder is a great plan - I record all my docs appointments for the same reason!! :winky: Bram. |
