Feel worse after a shower?

Hi again all,

There was a post a while back talking about after a shower people were feeling better symptom wise. There symptoms were reduced to a point.

I was the same too, but now, every time I take showers my symptoms increase dramatically. its just annoying, I would take a shower before going out to eat and I feel so zoned out and my dream symptom gets so much worse, very upsetting.

Because of this I've actually been avoiding showers, cause we tend to avoid things that make us feel bad. But obviously, I need to keep my hygiene good, so it still persists.

Anyone else have this issue?
Let me know what you think

Yes, I did. I resolved it by not having a Hot shower but a Warm one. If you get too hot, that's not good. ;)

Hi Sam,

I had posted this thread not too long ago; you should definitely take a look at it:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ghlight=shower

For me, despite loving showers all my life, showers are now a constant source of symptom intensification and rumination. Whereas I used to find them relaxing, I now find them a source of stress that diminishes my capacity to tolerate other things for the day's remainder.

Fortunately, I identified the problem: over-stimulation. The constant sound of the shower-head and water splash lead to "mental flooding". To combat this I've come up with a simple solution: I shower with ear plugs!! Since doing this, the over-stimulation/mental flooding is no longer an issue during my showers. However, if I forget my ear plugs, which occasionally happens I'm quickly reminded that I have to wear them.

Try it out... it's made my mornings (i.e. I shower in the AM) better than they used to! Hopefully this will help you too.

Glad to see ear plugs recommended.

Also, shampooing your hair can cause a lot of neck strain. I had to learn to be more protective of my neck by tensing my neck muscles so I did not twist and pull at my neck. It made a big difference for me. Also, a massage with my palms against me head and my fingers working the shampoo is helpful.

Toweling your hair after also needs to be done carefully.

I've been there. It can be done without stressing the neck.

Great! Happy to learn that there is multiple ways I can fix!

Going to give them a try next time I shower and see how it goes, will let you guys know!

Thanks again!
Sam

I also have problems with the shower, but my main issue is from my vertigo/balance issues. Moving the head around under the shower wouldn't help a lot of us.

I have one of those shower heads that I can hold in my hand, so I don't need to move my head around in such a confined space and it's especially helpful for washing my hair.

My main problem though is the feeling of my feet on the tiled floor when I'm standing. I don't feel safely balanced. Getting a shower seat and a hand held shower head helped me a lot. I do understand that my problems may be different from yours and others though.

take care :)

Yes! Overstimulation for me, as well.
Good suggestions!
Thanks!

Micro,

Amazing what we figure out isn't it....cool discovery.

Sam maybe an epsom salt bath on occasion.

Bud, sadly, it took 21 months and my wife to finally make the link for me... lol

Reading this has given me food for thought - 12 months post accident and I loathe showers, always thinking it was hands above my head when shampooing head that did the damage - thus take fewer showers. Will try tensing neck muscles which should hopefully help vestibular issues.

Also still sensitive where I hit my head. ? Nerve ends maybe, as it tingles, like electric current but over time some improvement; thus needing to reduce water pressure when washing hair.

Time management too, knowing not to shower before physical activity as I am always left fatigued, dizzy, and spacey - sometimes nauseous after a shower.
