Beta blocker to reduce anxiety

A while ago I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. My anxious thoughts were generally based around my head injury, but I also have pretty severe test anxiety. I am now in university, and have to do a long oral presentation once every couple of weeks. Unfortunately my anxiety causes very discomforting physical symptoms, which do not allow me to present.

I spoke to a family friend, whom is a MD, and they recommended a low dose beta blocker (propranolol). I was wondering if this is a safe treatment, and what opinions you have regarding it.

I would have posted this in anxiety forums, but I value the insight of individuals who are also struggling with PCS, because we are often affected by medications different than the majority.

I appreciate any responses.

I have propranolol in the medicine cabinet for such a situation. I also use it to subdue those unexpected over-stimulation caused rises in BP and such.

I can't say if it will allow you to be successful in your presentations. There are other chemicals that can interfere with your ability to keep your thoughts in order.

I suggest you look for opportunities to practice your presentations before others. Does your university have any type of disabilities assistance office ? In the states, every university does. They may be able to help you.

What course work requires so many oral presentations ?

Just some english classes that I require to complete my engineering degree. The premise is that engineers need to be able to present their ideas to a group of people. Beta-blockers are frequently used by performers to reduce the physical symptoms of their anxiety, to help perform.

So Mark, are the safety risks with such a drug minimal?

Lots of people take propranolol daily for years. You likely do not need much to settle you. You should get some and try it when you go into over-stim environments. My wife has some atenolol which does the same. Her BP can skyrocket from a stressful situation. We both may use it once or twice a year. Every week or two should be no big deal.
