Flying in a Airplane with TN
My son is in ny going to school and is having his showcase in may .I have Tn would i be able to fly with Tn or would it agravate the Tn?I live in florida so we are talking about a 2 and half hour filght. Any one with suggestions would be welcome. I know i could drive as well but prie of gas and the time it takes to get there seems flying would be better !! But i dont want my TN to get worse .
Thanks Rose |
First off, as you can probably guess by my user name I am a pilot.
Secondly, the cabin pressure inside commerical airplanes is kept at a comfortable altitude so it shouldn't bother you. Having said that, it would depend on whether or not any pressure bothers your TN. I have MS and sometimes pressure bothers me. Do you have problems when you drive up a hill? Or when you take an elevator up to the top of a tall building? It would be the same type of pressure change. Or even when the barometer changes from a high pressure to a low pressure. The 2 1/2 hour flight would not be a significant period of time for most people but people with TN are not most people! If you are that concerned, I would ask your doctor for something to help you with the pain that you could take just before the trip to help you relax, maybe a xanax or valium to relax. Have a great flight and a good time in NY! |
Well Tho I myself havent flown since I have had my face pain ,
most T.N. people that I have chatted with who have flown said they were fine of corse they took their perscribed meds for t.n. before flying. And like AV8 shared usualy if your ears pop and you feel the affects as you drive up mountian with pressure it would be the same likeness to flying. You could ask dr. for med to relax but also tell him the meds you take now. And hello fellow Florida T.Ner. I have a sister named Rose :). best of luck and dont worry just run by your doc . I think you will be fine! Peace BMW |

:) sent you reply Peace BMW |
I have flown many times with my bilateral TN and ON. Everyone is different, and we all have certain things that are triggers for us. I am only giving you my experience as if this happens to you, I would feel horrible for not having shared it with you.
With me, the flight is fine. It is the taking of, and especially the landing that are dreadful for me. The worst time for me was when we were circling over the rockies for over 40 mins, I just didn't think I was going to make it. Having said that, most landings and take offs are relatively short. I have attacks 24/7.........so I feel it is worth the pain to fly. Wishing you the best of luck and a pain free flight :) Nikki |
I am affected by pressure change. Even weather used to bother me and set off attacks. I had some of my worse TN attacks in the airplane. I have not flown is close to 15 years because of TN. When we travel, we drive. I have had an MVD and no longer suffer with TN pain although I do get the odd twinge here and there. I am still to fearful of flying to take the chance of rocking the boat. For me its just not worth it.
