white spots can be the resulting damage from a wide range of neurological conditions. The most common myelin damages, I believe, come from MS, and, according to NIH (the National Institute of Health) the next largest group are from adult leukodystrophies. These diseases have different etiologies (causes), one (MS) is thought to be an autoimmune disease; the leukodystrophies are generally genetically based. Migraines and variuous forms of dementia also can cause white spots. I have Cadasils which cause large areas of white spots as a result of multiple tia's.... with myelin damages so large that in advanced Cadasil cases it is difficult to find areas that are undamaged.
You might want to read in the MS forum which has the most extensive postings dealing with white matter damages, and then explore other areas. Good luck to you. White matter damages are of great importance to many, many people on this web site, and you should be able to connect easily with a number of people here.
