I was given nortriptyline. I had 1 day total of normal walking. However, I became extremely emotional, hostile, agitated. My husband and son were about to kick me out of the house LOL.

We figured out it was the meds and within 24 hrs of stopping them I was starting to feel back to normal.

In the posts I have read, I am blessed to have found out so soon. I was injured Dec 2, 06. RSD is in my Rht Knee. However, I have shooting pain up and down my whole leg sometimes. It has taken four months but I found a doctor (the 5th one) through outside referral through my health insurance that said "this is what it is and we need to aggressively treat it so it doesn't become worse." He immediately set me up for water therapy. This was this past Wednesday and PT was today. It hurt like hell. I even said to him "this is going to hurt later huh?" and he responded with "yes, this will definitely hurt later." I was crying while walking in the pool. I will also be calling the doc that referred me out to request a referral to a neurologist for help with pain.

I have found that googling helps with the different terms and definitions and side effects. That would be a good route. I would also search the forums here and find other posters who have gone through it so you can get firsthand accounts.

Hugs - you can make it.

Default Amitriptyline...

InHisHands,

I also was on Ami for a while. This medication caused me to start gaining weight right for the start - plus the sleep wasn't that much improved. They increased the Ami until I was taking 100 mg. That dose helped me sleep. However, by that time I had gained almost 30 pounds. I told the doctor that 30 lbs was enough. He readily prescribed Trazodone at that time.

Trazodone works well for me and I've lost the 30 pounds plus a few more since switching. In my experience, Trazodone is much better. Your experience may differ, but you do have another option available.

Best of luck,

Default Amni & Traz

Just wanted to give an update on the Amni\Trazodone post from first page. The Amni did not work, and the Trazodone worked (some) but made my heart race and felt as though it was trying to escape out of my body.

Now they are trying something else. I will update once I am on it for awhile. Patiently awaiting for the pharmacy to mail, goodness some sleep would be nice!

Gentle Sleepy hugs,

Rain

Default Xanax

Finally, I hope, I was on this once long ago for sleeping with another chronic pain issue and it worked very well. No with having difficulties, I got my primary to write me a script and see if now with the RSD it will work again.

Say lotsa Prayers for me.....

Hugs,

Rain

Grin Xanax

Well, I think we (doctor and I) found out what I personally needed to get some sleep. I have only been on it a few days, but from previous experiance, I think this may be it.

My pain levels are down, and hopes are up. I felt my chest loosen for the first time since my diagnoses (stress). I really think I have been to stressed and to tired, to function. I have been a little cranky during the day, but who isn't in the begining of most med's.

Gentle Hugs,

Rain

I too cannot sleep d/t trigeminal neuropathic pain - after 3 years I found that I need to "layer" my medicine. Some MDs will call it dual therapy. I know this sounds like a very high dose but I understand about the need to sleep:
I take 1) Ambien 5 mg 2) Amitry 100 mg 3) Ativan 1 mg.
I worked for a doc for 35 years and he always said "You need something BIGGER than the pain". Hope this helps.
