I am going to post again today to update you on the Dextromethorphan, my Lindsay told me last night that is taking away her burning pain...She has not taken an opiad in over a week. I am telling you that I think they may be onto something here. It is compounded at a pharmacy it cost me $48.00 for 480 mls.

She takes 4mls every 8 hours as needed for pain. The bottle is huge. The script is written like this Dextromethorphan 25mg/5ml syrup.

I am only posting again, because I see something working right now. Hope it is good information for some of you. The script does not have the alcohol like the over the counter and is compounded in a stronger dose.

I'm so glad it was working for her and I hope it still is but I'm confused on the use of it to be honest as I've read mixed things. Most of what I've read is that the benefit is to increase the effectiveness of opiates so you can take less.

I know my fiancee had me taking it before my ketamine infusions when I was on opiates but I haven't since until I thought I saw something on these boards last night, maybe this post.

It's also somewhat confusing because I was taking the OTC robitussun gels in the past but did just read another article saying you needed to have it compounded at a pharmacy but the robitussin gels are only dextromethorphan.

Please don't take this as my questioning the benefit as I do believe there is some, I'm just trying to figure out what exactly it is and what's the best way to achieve it. I do keep seeing reference to it's help in relieving burning pain (which is what I need right now) but then some scientific papers only discuss it as an adjunct to opiates.

How has Lindsay been with it this past month?

Lindsay has not taken any opiads since she started the Dextro...It is compounded at a greater strength at the pharmacy. It takes the most of her burning pain away. She is only taking that and cymbalta. There is no codine in it either. There are always mixed messages with medications. But, it is working for my daughter at this point in time and I am very happy. The over the counter has alcohol in it. The compounded one does not. Therefore there is not side effects from it. She does get a little dizzy sometimes after she takes it. Hope this helps.

My Neurologist had me try the over the counter cough syrup with Dextro in it and it made me really nauseous. I was just wondering if your daughter had any similar side effects? I stopped it after 2 days since I could barely eat, but now I'm wondering if I should have stuck it out.

This is compounded so it doesn't have the alcohol in it, that is what probably made your stomach sick. She does have stomach issues so I don't know if that is a side effect. She just had an endoscopy and they found inflamation. So I know her pm said that it is very different then the over the counter one. Tell them to give you a script.

I'm so happy it's working for your Lindsay. The dextromethorphan I was referring to is not supposed to have any alcohol either so it may be an option if some people want to try it and a bit less expensive, there are also generic tablets but only 10mg. I'm assuming this is not as potent as what Lindsay is taking but I'm hoping 3 a day will have some benefit anyway.
