Hi Again! Well, it is amazing what one can find scribbled on the back of a napkin at the back of a recipe book---another family recipe! (Trying to get ORGANIZED)...

GINGERBREAD APPLE COBBLER

4 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced*
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar

Gingerbread Topping:
1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 tablespoons butter at room temperature

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees; place sliced apples mixed with lemon juice and sugar in greased 8" baking pan; bake for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile:
Beat eggs until foamy. Add buttermilk, molasses and sugar--beat until well blended.

Sift together flour, salt soda, baking powder and spices. Add the butter and the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients; beat until well blended.
Pour over the apples and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Serve warm, garnished with dollops of whipped cream if desired. (Vanilla ice-cream isn't too bad, either!!)

(*Other fruits, such as peaches or pears can be used instead of apples)

This is VERY yummy!!! Enjoy!!

Yes, Liz, exactly what I was thinking of - those tin telephones (they worked!) and dressing up - fine with mum till you started on her new clothes

Here are a few off the top of my head:
putting clothes through the mangle with grandma
selecting a feather duster from her huge collection of specialised ones
smelling my irish mum's soda bread from down the street
wearing your mum's high heels, and your dad's huge boats of shoes
singing old-fashioned songs from a songbook with grandpa
boiled sweets in an airtight jar with a rubber stopper (only one at a time)
learning copperplate handwriting with a tracing copybook
writing with a wooden nib pen, the inkwell clogged with blotting paper
licking out the cake mixture from the bowl
shrivelling ants with a magnifying glass in the sun (sorry!)
trying to parachute off the top of a shed with a sheet

Memories..tra la la la la laaa la

climbing trees without worrying about clothes!
wearing your mums nighties as dresses and thinking that her sexy neglige was a great dress
learning to spin whilst your grandma undid all the mistakes and patiently explained AGAIN about snapped wool being held too tight.
Going blackberry picking with mummy and both of us jumping in the mud with the animals.
Making jam and pies when we got in. Learning how to bottle and preserve stuff.
having your hair tied back in a french plait every day.
having to not only wear a school shirt but also a tunic, boater hat, jumper, blazer, scarf, socks, shoes, knickers, vest and tie......from the age of 2 1/2
being sent home for using boater hat as frisbee.
trying to explain to mummy that boater had looked alot better flat than tradionally hat shaped.
A day in the back garden would mean a day of explorers, mountain rescue incidents, amazon tribesmen and dens.

ah... memories..
