I have used one. It worked well on reducing my swelling in particular. I really liked the combo of massage, then sauna. It was much more effective than a regular sauna, btw.

I went to infrared sauna sessions at a local tanning salon, which I found through an Internet search. You should be able to contact the manufacturer you're interested in, and see if they have a place for you to test one of their machines out locally. You might find one at a spa or fitness center, as well.

This is one of those things that might help slightly lower his pain levels. Taking daily baths with Epsom salts might work just as well, though...
