Default Help with prescription costs

Hello: I just talked to someone who went to pick up a prescription, but could not get it. The cost was over $900!!!

Does anyone here know of some programs that would help this family. They have reached the do-nut hole and have to pay full costs. Last year this same family paid over $17,000 for medicine. If the husband does not get this filled, he will likely die.

The only thing I could think to suggest was to write their representative. They do not qualify for medicaid because their income is too high. They would qualify if they could deduct their medical expenses from their income, but that is not allowed.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is it legal to get drugs from Canada?

I just wish I could give them some good news and some hope.

Regards, Lil

I think a couple of forums have free meds links posted or the brand name manufacturer can give discounts if there is a need.
I'll try to find the links.

Default Hi Lil,

I have 2 friends that fall into that donut hole. Betty gets her meds from Canada. The toll free no. is 1-877-966-0567. She had to finally resort to buying from Canada.

My other friend has MS and Susan and I tried for months trying to help him find the help to pay for his medication and couldn't find anything. We also tried that no. Montel Williams puts on his show all the time. That ones a joke to for a lot of people.

When I think of that donut hole, it just sickens me. I always said I wish the guy who came up with it fell into it and drowned in the milk. LOL

If you do find any of them that will help please let me know I will pass it on to people.

Ada

Thank you so much for your replies. I will forward the answers to them. They hit the donut hole in February, just six weeks into the year. The husband has acute renal failure at this time so they really need the help. Thanks again. Regards, Lil

Don't the Drs offices or the hospital have this sort of information?

What about all the folks that don't use the internet yet- how do they find this kind of information?

Or even the Ins company should know of programs to cover those in the situations like this.

Default Jo,

My neighbor as I said has MS. When we first started trying to find help for him in Jan. of last year. Susan, he and I got on the computer and made calls and could find nothing for him. To get his medication he finally found he had to drive 45 miles one way every week to let his Dr. give him an injection. That's the only way the insurance will pay for it.

The Drs. office's sometimes do have phamplets for certain companies but if you fall into that donut hole as it's called then you cannot get the help you need.

Hi Lil,
Yes, it is now legal to purchase meds from Canada. I tried the pharmacy that Ada was so kind to recommend but they didn't carry all the meds I needed. I did find another one . It is called polar meds.com. The phone number is on their site so you could call and get the prices on the meds you need. Hope this helps. jeannie

Lil---If he has a really nice DR. the Dr. can write or call the company that is stealing - sorry charging $900. from some one dying. My husband also hits the hole and his Dr. called the company for some relief. Also some churches have funds for people in need and community centers that help those in need. Just call every church in the area and ask if they can help or a member of their church. Their are a lot of people with deep pockets that will help if the need is real and some one lets them know of the need.
I own-it owns me- a restaurant and someone in my RSD support group did not have a refrigerator. I was telling one of my customers this and she took out her check book and said order her one and use this check. I almost fell over. Someday I hope to be able to do the same. For now I send my prayers. Carose

Hi Diamond--perhaps your friends can get some assistance/advice through AARP. Might be worth a phone call..they were VERY helpful to my friend who has a similar situation.

Sincerely,

Brokenwings
