We don't have any pets, but right now my wife is dog-sitting our son's little dog; the experience hasn't been a lot of fun for me: the damn dog sneaks into my room to look for spilled food, and twice he brushed against a potato chip bag in the early morning hours.

Imagine being drowsy or sleeping lightly and hearing what sounds like a 30 pound rat rummaging around....I almost had to take Xanax to calm back down.

I have been thinking of buying a couple of 10 gallon aquariums to brighten my room, but haven't been all that successful with fish in the past, so this thread came at a perfect time for me.

I need suggestions about what kinds of fish to buy: they must be cheap and able to withstand some brief periods of famine as my short-term memory deficits don't bode well for hopes of rigorously timed feedings. Any ideas? ...Vic

Oh, I forgot to mention I have 8 gerbils (soon to be 2) named Squiggie, Eggo, Cow, Chicken, Reese, Q-Tip, and Rat.

And I would recommend getting goldfish and snail things that clean the sides of the tank.

Hey Desi,

It is so hard to replace animals - they never really can replace one as most of them have such large personalities!!! So did you get a Frisky 2?

I can't bear the thought of any animal being abandoned or not cared for properly and I suppose I love a challenge of seeing whether love will make a difference to their behaviour, and it normally does!

Love ya hun

Let's see, wild guess, a beautiful beautiful beagle? Boy or girl. No matter, he/she is great.

You must be psychic.... Sweet-natured girl, Apple; she was 3 when she was brought to me in a terrible state, hairless and skeletal. I had a huge Ridgeback/mongrel cross (my Dog of Dogs, best dog I've ever had, *so* sadly now passed on) who fell in love with her instantly. She was already named and apparently had had several names before that, so I decided Apple would do - at least she answered to it.

Little did I know Gwyneth Paltrow was going to copy us in the name department, with her baby, shortly after, lol!

all the best

At the time I got rsd, I had: one golden retriever, one blue and gold macaw, two 55-gal saltwater aquariums, one 20-gal fresh water tank, a cage full of hamsters (you can trade the babies to pet stores for supplies to feed the other animals), an iguana and a nile monitor lizard, and two adorable fuzzy chinchillas! But as you can imagine, it was hard though worthwhile work caring for and cleaning up after all those pets... so when the rsd got bad, most of them had to go. The rest have since died of natural causes.

Now I "just" have two cats. Squeakers is my female calico, I got her from the pound. Groucho is my male long-haired Tuxedo, I got him and his brothers and sisters from under an apt building.

They bring me so much joy and comfort I can't even describe it. Groucho, my cuddle kitty, regularly wants to be in my lap, on my bed, wherever I am. Squeak isn't much for cuddling, but she's a great source of comfort when the aids symptoms get real bad. She comes and sits with me in the bathroom, just purrs while lying pressed up against my leg. You'd think I wouldn't be in the mood when I'm that sick, but that's not the case at all. Just the fact that she cares enough to sit with me while I'm vomiting helps a bunch.

One day I'll post the story of where my blue and gold macaw is now... it's pretty awesome.

Default Dogs rule!! Cats too!!

I have a beautiful sweet beagle we got from the pound, named Ginger. The only problem is she has PTSD. She only allows my family near her, anyone else she get under the bed or my computer desk. I can't print what I want to do to the person or persons that beat her. We have only had dogs until recently, and a mother cat was killed on the highway in front of our restaurant. We did not know but she left behind three small kittens. Of course we ended up feeding them and two of our customers adoped the twin calio cats. But we keep the strangest looking cat, he is a wonderful hunter!! He is tall and skinny (we feed him very good food, still skinny) but he is pure black on top of his fur, under the black fur is pure white fur you can not see until you raise up the black fur. As soon as I drive into the restaurant driveway and stop my car he jumps up on the roof, hangs his head over the window and looks at me upside down all excited as to say what did you bring me. His name is Jet, fastest cat around!! My animals have given me much joy, without wanting anything in return but a little food and to be petted. People should be more like animals!! Carose
