Hello Everyone,

I am finally off of my feet after being on them for about the last 3 hours, trying to get to my Pain Management Doctor's Appointment and find a Pharmacy that had my Pain Management Meds. Been a long day already.

I recently was told that my CRPS has moved into the areas of my brain that are responsible for controlling my Linguistic and Communicative Functions. My brain is often Blank, when communicating, my words are slurred, and I stutter and stammer. It has been really difficult communicating. As a result, I don't say too much publicly. I also took an American Sign Language Course years ago, when I had 3 Deaf People in one of the churches that I was the pastor at, so, I've begun to relearn the language. I have someone learning along with me, which really helps. If any of you struggle to communicate because of CRPS / RSD, ASL really is a great way to communicate. At least it has been a real God send for me. If you'd like information about books or apps for your tablet, iPad, iPhone, or smartphone, please let me know. There is some very good stuff out there.

I too use asl....wait I take that back....mostly finger spell. I have taken courses and have a close friend, whom I don't see that often so text, who is deaf.
For some reason I can't get past full sentences....I tend to try and sign every word I am speaking. I don't know why my brain won't look at this as another language not as English. I am bilingual so I understand the backwards of sentence structure.

Thanks, I'm exhausted and my pain is elevated. I ran out of meds yesterday morning. So, I was up on my feet and in pain as I was out. I ended up screaming out in pain at the Pharmacy, so I'm glad to be home, on meds and resting.

What helped me was when I realized that ASL is like painting a picture. That really helped. Yet, I must admit. I pick up languages pretty easily... Greek, Hebrew, English, ASL. And not necessarily in that order. GRIN

Happy to hear that you can pick up language well. Tied Hebrew.... Nope. And I have been interested in asl for over, well I won't say how long:D
And Ican't/haven't been able to get it yet! I went on field trips...have been one on one and I ll be darned if my brain wont bend.....but I will not give in.......

LOL.. Got to love your attitude. You'll get it. Persistence is Queen! There is an iPad app that is very well done.

I am not an app person...there is a teacher I follow online sometimes. My first book I was told by my deaf friend wasn't helpful....so I ran out to Barnes and Nobel got me a picture book. And I find myself referring to my old one.....but I need to learn for health reasons.
Anywho....it's close to smoothie time....am surprised no one thought it was an earthquake.... NT people it's just my tummy.....

Enna, I hope you are staying away from the cherries with your smoothies. I needed a good laugh today. You just made my day, Thank You!

My husband and I have often talked about trying to pick up ASL, he was born with a defect in both ear canals that has left him with a 70% hearing loss all of his life. Surprisingly, he was never taught sign language, but is amazing at reading lips. It can be quite funny at times though. One day he was certain that I said "I need to go wash my water buffalo". I don't remember what it was that I originally said but what he thought I said has stuck in both of our memories.

I would be very grateful if you could PM me, or mention here, your recommendations of what books and apps you have found to be useful. My language skills are ok, I took 10 years of German in school and managed to teach myself some Spanish over the past year. I would love to pick up something that would be useful to both my husband and I.

Well, at least your buffalo is sophisticated. He has climbed in your water even without your asking him.

I will provide you with the information for ASL resources, once my pain levels return to baseline and I can get up to get it for you.

Oh, and I recommend you corn feed your water buffalo. That makes for the most tender meat!

Dearest purplefoot.....I have not been attacked by any fruit as of late....that one encounter was enough though.
You personal story was so sweet and uplifting. My hubby has a lot of ringing in his ears and if I do not face him when I am speaking....he hears nothing. We even have to mute the telly when we want to say something about the program we are watching together. Most of the time he asks....what did they say?
So together we finger spell to each other.....once we even went to a supermarket and used only our hands. Doyou know how many dirty looks we got? It was awful. One child came right inbetween us and just stared up at him. No excuse me and the parent didn't even apologize... I know they thought we were deaf but like your husband, what if he could read lips?
Please don't jump all over me that we were being disrespectful to the deaf as well as the hearing.....our deaf friends recommended this to improve our sign language and we never spoke the intire time to make the hearing uncomfortable. Our friend is a professor for asl.
As my jaw deteriorates and my husband's hearing is going we find ourselves using our form of asl but the true way is our goal.
