Thumbs Up Good Vibes for Swimtime's son

A shout out to all in case you missed it. Swimtime posted last week that her son's surgery was scheduled for today to get hardware out and give that nerve a chance! I know many of us have had him in our thoughts and prayers. Our youngest survivors have a dear and special place in my heart.

I just wanted open up the call for extra healing thoughts for him and family as he recovers.

Hi M, This is for you....
I hope your procedure went well and you do not feel too . Surgery is never fun and I am sure the last year has felt like . We have heard from your Mom about how hard you have worked on getting better and from what she's said

I hope you well as you heal and have a speedy recovery so you can soon!

Then we're all gonna be like this .

Swimtime, I hope you are hanging in there Mom. I am sending extra

You all are too sweet!!!!
So here's the update: Surgery went great, and he's reasonably comfortable so far!!!! Woo-hoo!

They ended up doing ketamine, gabapentin, a local nerve block and a regional block, and a couple other pain meds tossed in for good measure. Pretty much covered all the bases to prevent a flare. The block is wearing off slowly, he's still kinda tingling and buzzing. He just regained movement and sensation to touch this morning. It's a relief that the block has lasted so long. With the first surgery, (hardware implant), it wore off abruptly after just a few hours. Such a relief to not have that happen again! He'll be on low dose gapabentin for a couple weeks to keep flare at bay while he heals.

Thanks so much for all your support! He's pretty happy the hardware is out. He has to use the ortho boot for two weeks to prevent refracture because it's like swiss cheese in there with all the screw holes. Then he can start walking with a shoe and we'll get a better idea of where he's at.

Thanks everyone! I'll keep you posted!

Swimtime:

Wishing your son the best toward a speedy recovery. I know all to well what it is like to have a hardware store removed from the ankle. It is such a joy after recovery to know that movement is no longer hampered by all that metal. I do not know what it is like to recover after the surgery when going in, knowing that you have CRPS, that it could make things worse if the precautions are not done. I am so happy to hear that it sounds like everything went very well. Again, wishing him a speedy pain free recovery.

That is great he is doing well! I hope everyday gets a little better for him. I am sure just having that hardware out is relief.

"What it's like when going in, knowing that it could make things worse". Oh boy. One of the most agonizing decisions we've had to make. It really came down to a couple of things: 1, He has wanted the hardware out for many months because he felt it was the source of most of his problem. 2, It was either risk permanent disability and limitation because of hardware related pain, or take the chance with the surgery for a full recovery. We wanted to give him every chance to get better.

The ortho surgeon gave him a 50 / 50 chance that it could make things worse or better. Other doctors were much more optimistic. But yeah, it was a pretty terrible decision to face as a parent!! I'm grateful for the support here.
