Default Music Therapy & CRPS

Hey, I need some help here. My music is beginning to sound a little ..um, how shall I put this... used... yay, used.

So, I'm interested in broadening my perspective. I'm not a Rap Music Fan, so, outside of that genre, what are some songs that you turn to, when you are having a bad pain day?

Crazy smiling right now, after watching videos of old songs. "Come on Eileen," "I would walk 500 miles," Girls just want to have fun," "Walking on Sunshine," "Don't Stop thinking about tomorrow" one video leads to another! Thank you, Spike.

I have a pretty wacky selection of music on my iPod...my tastes are fairly eclectic...but each serves a purpose. Don't laugh...okay you can laugh...but here goes:

1. My #1 playlist I turn to when in pain, especially flare ups, is called Instrumentals. Most are movie themes or from tv shows such as: Somewhere in Time, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Same Time Next Year, The Mirror Has 2 Faces, Twilight, The Tudors, Dexter, Scarlett, North and South, etc...just some of my favorites but all very relaxing, pretty songs. Also a lot of stuff by Lori Line in that playlist...love her music.

2. Disney Parks music: Disney World is my happy place so this one is a mood lifter. When I find myself in some need of cheering up I am able to go to my happy place by listening to the music from the parks and my favorite shows and rides. First song in the list is the music from the fireworks show at Magic Kingdom...Wishes...brings such joy to my heart.

3. The Oldies: Mostly a selection of 50s and 60s songs that are my favorites such as Walk Like a Man, Runaround Sue, Sloopy, That'll Be The Day, It's My Party, The Wanderer, Sherry, etc. Generally the more upbeat songs that are fun to sing to. I listen to this when I'm doing more active stuff (like washing dishes) because it energizes me and if I'm singing along I am less focused on the pain.

4. Country: Same as the Oldies...just some upbeat high energy stuff that I can sing along with from artists like Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, etc.

Those are the main ones...I also have playlists for The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, American Idol (older stuff...haven't watched the last few years), Sound of Music, Disney Movies, Love Songs, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Sam Cooke, The Peacemakers (Reel to Real and Americano), Bob Schneider, Todd Snider (his live stuff...hilarious...good when I need a laugh), Michael McDermott (Bourbon Blue), Ani DiFranco, Jill Sobule...and gosh there are more but I can't think of off the top of my head.

When I'm at a loss of what I want to listen to then I often hit shuffle all songs and just go with whatever comes on...THAT is a fun experiment and I usually hear stuff I forgot about.

OH...and songs from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Can't believe I forgot that...the album and also the musical episode Once More With Feeling. Nostalgia...what can I say?

I looked at my iPod today as I put on music while I did the dishes this morning and get dinner ready (yes...at 8am this morning I was making dinner for tonight in the crock pot)...and I forgot a couple of my more recent additions: Jimmy Durante and Ella Fitzgerald. I like having those playlists on in the background when I am just relaxing or need some background noise and am sick of HGTV. I also have Carly Simon's "My Romance" album...that was always a favorite of mine...find it very relaxing and nice to sing along with (have been listening to it since I was little and I found my mom's cassette tape of it that I listened to in my walkman for months on end).

I personally prefer to stream my music from the internet and my "channels" vary more than a music store. Plus this way I can say I like one type of music or even one type of artist and they will create a play list from that. I have listed a few of my channels below.

1. The Temptations and similar groups- back when I could cook and clean for an extended period of time this was often my go-to. I often combine it with #2.

2. Frank Sinatra- nothing like Old Blue Eyes when I am in a good mood.

3. Country- this varies as well everything from George Strait to Garth Brooks to Shania Twain to Carrie Underwood and everything in between

4. Spa moods- this obviously I like when I am trying to relax

5. Irish punk- I put this on for a few different reasons one being I need to get amped up for something another being I am in pain and mad at the world. A few bands I like are Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and a few others that most people have never heard of

6. 90's pop OR 90's alternative- I love this for when I am feeling a little nostalgic

7. Disney- There is nothing like some Disney soundtracks to perk me up. Plus all my friend's kids think I am cool for knowing all the words to so many songs.

Those are the ones I listen to the most. There was a time when I listened to some harder music (System of a Down, Five Finger Death Punch) but I only go there when I am having a really bad day. I really like using a music streaming site because it's free plus I have access to such a variety of music.

Good luck on your music hunt!
