Here's a good question. I purchased Aflac at work about 6 months ago. Last month I had knee surgery due to increasingly frequent dislocations and problems at work (as though I would know when it was going to dislocate!) Anyway, it's been a month and a half since I've made my claim and they have thus far refused to pay it as my knee is a pre-existing condition. Would the fact that I have RSD and am unable to work be a completely seperate thing to file for STD through Aflac for? I know that most everyone on the site has had their own financial adjustment to make to this disease, so I thought that maybe someone out there would know.
Many thanks, Lori Lee |

Hi Lori Lee,
I'm sorry I don't have any experience with insurance. It's scary isn't it. Your right, there isn't anyone that has RSD that hasn't experienced financial consequences from this monster. I'm scared to death, to be without insurance. Of course, once we have RSD insurance companies and many many doctors don't want to have anything to do with us. I even offered cash to one neurologist that I had been seeing, but changed insurance companies when we moved and he would not see me! That's a story that has been told many times. I'm very sorry you are going thru this difficult time. Financial stress is one of that hardest things to go thru, especially when we have children and want the best for them and their future. We both know the stress makes our condition worse, so what do you do to counteract stress.? I listen to music, call compassionate friends, work at encouraging others no matter what their problems are. My Dr.. changed my meds up and my deep depression I was in for so long, is completely gone!!!! yeh I just feel at peace and acceptance with RSD, but not giving up at all. I'm researching HBOT treatment and a couple of other things. I'm forcing myself to move around the house more. Cleaning, even if its 20 minutes and then rest. and start again. Who would ever guess this would be our life! My daughter and I played tennis 5 days a week, water skiied, snow skiied, horseback. swimming, Our family traveled a lot..Europe 3 times for 3 weeks each time. What a blessing. We are so grateful to have done that before RSD We are just so grateful to have been able to do so much before the HAMMER came down. I've had RSd 12 years now , full body 4 years without a diagnosis. It began the day following breast surgery. I'm grateful it was benign, but it still started a road of pain and suffering. Anyway, Lori Lee, I hope all works out well for you and insurance. Are you able to work? We own our own business, which is very nice. The group insurance is good and the only way I can be covered by insurance. Group insurance can not turn down employees or owners. I'm so grateful to have it. Had a $30,000 plus bill from passing out from low blood pressure. I'm 60, so have to make it a little longer. Take care, funny movies, reading, a little walk, planting a flower, just anything to take your mind off pain You aren't alone, Do you have a support group near by? I hope to attend next meeting. Please let us know how you are! Loretta |
