Yeah, just heard it on the news - but northern Japan is a very long way from South China, thank heavens. We just missed a typhoon, went off towards Vietnam but it has left us with grey rainy weather. And it's gone cool, for the first time this year - 20C, that's my cut-off point, anything cooler and it's freezing for me

Wanted to get back to you straight away...great minds and all that, I was just going to reply to your other post - which I will do now. (Should be working but hey, a girl needs a break..)

Ok..I am confused??

I got on here this morning, all worried because it was all over the morning News that some HUGE Earthquake (8.something??? ) had hit Japan?!!!? AND that some Huge MONSTER of a Tidal Wave was heading to swamp Japan and I don't even know where all else,but it sounded like all of the coasts anywhere around, including China and Russia....even Alaska was under a Tidal Wave Warning thingy??

Now....I don't know much about Geography, I will admit. I didn't have to take it in high school (one of the horrible things about going to high school in Alabama), but I DO know that China is a whole lot closer to Japan than Alaska is? And that a Big Mamma Jamma of a whopping 8.something earthquake might be felt in otherwheres?

But, I also know that I am one of those people that have absolutely NO concept of distance (or barely any...I am a little better than I used to be) it is one of the reasons that I am also one of those people that is directionally challenged and couldn't find my way out of a paper sack (well...I could, I just wouldn't know where to go after that. LOL...And at one time I wouldn't have been able to. My SON sure can't. It seems to run in our family; my Grandmother was the same way. I think that is it some type of Learning Disability type of thing, myself....I know that it sure does make life HARD! And you sure do feel like a Fool most of the time, and get LOTS of funny and exasperated looks and loud blowing sighs from folks. LOL Thank GOD that I can read a friggin road map, though. Lots of folks that are directionally challenged can not do that, so I am at least a head of the game there. LOL)). So, I could have everything totally wrong, and you could be as far away from Japan as Alaska is...or further.

So..basically..... Did you feel the Earthquake? Did you have any damage at all? Everything Ok? No aftershock problems? I know that when that one hit Hawaii, Dana had troubles with all of the aftershocks, some of which were almost as strong as the initial Earthquake. And...no major flooding still?

I am a supreme worry wart. So, please, when you get the chance (I know that there is a huge time difference, what with you being on the wrong side of the world and all...ROFL), will you please let this weirdo worry wart know what you and your house and everything is all A-Ok? Pretty Please? With Sugar On top? And a Cherry (or strawberry, or whatever)?

Hey thanks for worrying about me, both of you!

Yup, I'm fine, fine, fine. The geography is difficult, I know, but for a start HK is about 2,000 miles from this earthquake/tsunami centre and we're just not in a zone or landplate that's affected by them - unless it's really massive, but results here would be minimal, maybe get some high tides and general bad weather.

That region in Japan is famous for it, because it's the start of the Aleutian Islands, part of the "Ring of Fire", which stretches from N. Japan (Japan is pretty much off the Russian coast), follows the Russian coast northeast, then leaps over to Alaska and down the US side - gotta remember that Russia and Alaska are only 55 miles apart, so the Pacific in this northern region isn't as wide as we imagine, at all.

Anyway, here:
"The majority of volcanoes and earthquakes occur along boundaries of the dozen or so major plates that more or less float on the surface of Earth. One of the most active plate boundaries where earthquakes and eruptions are frequent, for example, is around the massive Pacific Plate commonly referred to as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It fuels shaking and baking from Japan to Alaska to South America."

I've attached coupla maps, which make it clear as mud - but on the world map I've marked the quake in red, me in pink (of course, darlings!...)

As you see, I'm safely tucked away on the edge of the South China Sea. Summer brings typhoons, but that's about it here, pretty safe in comparison. (Touch wood, touch wood...)

How sweet you all are! I woke up in the night for a glass of water, here I still am, 6a.m, back to bed I go...if I can..

Mt St Helens volcano was close enough to spew ash on us when it erupted 1980s - plus Mt Hood too and then Mt Rainer up in WA is near my sis. I found these sites.

Hi All,
Tsunami watch here in Hawaii started at about 1:30am. The effects of the tide actually started at about 7:30am and stopped at about 9:00am. The harbors were closed to all traffic and the police and life guards "tried" to keep everyone out of the water. But of course, we have some die hard surfers who thought it would be fun to surf during this event.

What I found silly was Civil Defense decided NOT to sound the alarm to alert the Islands of the upcoming emergency. Decided it would cause too much panic because they knew for sure the tsumami that was being generated was not huge and was not going to be devestating. So decided to warn by patrol instead. Was this smart? Who knows.

The ocean waters were interesting to say the least. The surges went on for a couple of hours. Swirling waters...in and out. Video is amazing. Only one person injured. A 70 year old tourist caught in the water when the water was receding and she hit the breakwall in Waikiki. I believe, the largest surge was 6 feet.

The fact of the matter is we had a 6 hour warning period, I believe. This is good. If in fact a tsunami is generated from an Earthquake from our area, we would only have basically a 25 minute warning, and it more than likely wouldn't be just 6 ft. surges as in this Japan Earthquake.

So...another lesson...another drill for our island.

We are still having aftershocks from our Earthquake of October 15th. 2 yesterday. Scary stuff.
