Hi kelly,
I know on other forums many use Epsom salts in the bath water or foot tub, for muscle cramps & soreness.

I tried it because a doctor suggested it to me. I didn't like it and I didn't feel soothed but that is only me. I have heard it helps others not so much rsd people but with other chronic conditions.

I have run across several links that actually suggested that Epsom Salts are beneficial even down to the cellular level.....having something to do with Potassium and Calcium. I am sick at the moment, but will look it up and send as soon as I'm able. You have to soak the affected area for 20 minutes several times a day to see a lot of relief. Kelly.....I'll PM you later once I'm feeling better!! Hope you're having a good day!!! Hugs....

Dear Kelly,

As promised, I have found a few links regarding the use of Epsom Salts and how and why it works. Some people may react differently, depending on how far their RSD has progressed or where it is located, but I find this intriguing nonetheless. It does seem to move it past the "old wives tale" status into medical legitimacy. The biggest problem for ME is sitting still long enough to soak my full 20 minutes!! I hope this helps!!! Hoping that this brings SOMEONE some relief out there!!!

Use Epsom salt and almost hot water on a frequent basis.
The Epsom salt being "hyperosmolar" magnesium sulfate
(meaning the magnesium sulfate has an extraordinarily
high potential for the movement of molecules) saturates
the extracellular space with magnesium. This secondarily
works as a calcium channel blocker, and improves the
function of the nerves in the skin and subcutaneous tissue
helping the nerve to regrow. As a matter of fact, Epsom
salt and hot water should be the daily routine for
treatment of RSD and should totally replace the harmful
damage of cold water exposure.

This was from Dr. Hooshmand's site:
Yes, the magnesium enters into the body profusely and acts as a calcium channel blocker. The calcium channel blocker effect of the magnesium prevents stroke, heart attack, and stops the constant epileptic seizures that kills pregnant women suffering from eclampsia.
Epsom salt soaking helps the patient by acting as an osmotic agent, extracting the poisonous and irritative chemicals from the involved extremity through the skin. In addition, the magnesium in itself acts as a calcium channel blocker which helps reduce the pain, inflammation, edema and breakdown of tissues.

Soak RSD affected limbs in epsom salt bath/dish to get blood circulation to nourish skin, plus it warms the limb at the same time. Epsom salts is a calcium channel blocker, thus vasodilation occurs.

Mom, if you can't sit there, try soaking a towel in the espon salt solution and putting it on your leg. A light weight towel or gauze. Gauze might work better, so it's not something heavy.

I broke my hand in November, which hasn't healed correctly. I soak a wash cloth in espon salt water and put it on my hand. It sure helps and is less of a hassle than a bowl of water.

I do use the bath for a good soak once in awhile. I have a bad back. Not as often as I like. But even a warm hand towel with espon salt helps there too.

Lightbulb Please...

DO NOT use epsom salts as an enema.

You can poison yourself this way.

For soaking it is a great symptom reducer. Those who have
dramatic improvements with epsom salts, need to consider improving the diet to contain more magnesium, or to take
supplements. Many people are low in this mineral.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread1138.html

For supplement doses aim for 1/2 the RDA which is about 200mg of elemental. The above post has alot information I have gathered over the years to help.

There are other things that help block the NMDA receptors for pain.

zinc
melatonin (recently discovered)
magnesium

Thank you so much for clarifying that! I posted this on my first cup of coffee and didn't think the edit that out. You are right, many of us ARE low on Magnesium.....I take a supplement before bed. I will go in and edit my post regarding the enema part so as not to confuse anyone. Thanks again!!
