Question Oh my gosh- I didn't know this!

Some magnesium is absorbed thru the skin.

When you have swelling you have a back up of blood in the small capillaries and this prevent NEW blood from getting thru with its nutrients.

Magnesium reduces swellling by improving circulation to tissues that are clogged up. Also magnesium works against calcium in the NMDA receptor, which can lower pain responses.

Many of us on PN use epsom salts all the time.
(including me)
My left foot/calf/knee are too swollen for any shoe or bootie (I also found the soft chenille sock works for work). In a chair as I can't walk just now. But I'm excited to try the Epsom Salts! - I can handle warm water/not running like a shower; NO cold water! I would love to get a shoe on-any shoe. My lower leg is cyanotic(sp?) VERY cold to touch but will suddenly turn bright red & start to BURN WHAT WORKS FOR THE BURNING?! Any tricks to stop it? Or calm it down?! Would appreciate ANY ideas on that problem!
- so far for me: VERY soft flannel/brushed flannel, velvet/velveteen (I'm going to look silly come summer though), silk, satin.BEST: bare leg/foot, no blankets/anything touching. My Chai Tea helps me to relax - with one piece of chocolate as my reward for surviving another hour/day ;-); my sound machine also works to distract me, I can focus on the repetitiveness-that's calming as well.
THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL IDEAS!
Please? Suggestions for when it's burning? I would appreciate that so much!

Default Burning Pain

My Dr. has me taking 750 mg. of magnesium and thanks to Ms.D's reply now I know why! I did not know the connection. It must help with the burning pain, but also helps with constipation when I take pain meds. I have a "TENS" unit that helps and oddly enough a warm heating pad over flannel helps me too. I have yet to figure what sets off the burning pain because I guess I'm fortunate that it comes and goes.
It's all such a mystery - We need a cure!

Hello....I use under armor under my clothes to keep them from moving about my burning skin! I also found that those plushy soft diabetic socks are great to keep something between my feet and the floor. Carpet feels like those hard burs and flooring is much too cold.
Thanks for your post, and I hope to get to know you! Conni

Has anyone else tried spray antipersperant for the sweating like ASB mentioned ?

That never dawned on me ! Is it better to let the sweat out though ?

I have found lighter denim pants at Fashion Bug that are more comfy to me. I have RSD in my foot/ankle/calf and the heavy denim drives me bonkers!

I found cotton t-shirts that are big and loose feel best. All of my t-shirts are men's. I wear Danskin pants. They're uber soft and comfy! I have a couple of pairs of yoga pants I picked up at walgreens that are the same. With the ones I picked up at walgreen's, you have to remember to follow the wash and dry directions on the label or they will shrink! LOLOL I picked up some men's tube socks, in black which is my fav color, and they're soft and comfy. I wear 2 pair on each foot cause it helps cushion my feet and also helps them stay a little warmer.

Hugs,

Karen

Hah! I wear men's underwear, because for some reason, it feels better. Down pillows for sleep and travel. My RSD is in arms, hands, shoulders and now moving across my chest, so I sleep with arms wrapped around a REALLY beat-up soft down pillow. Two soft pillows under head, and make sure your shoulder is UNDER the bottom pillow. Can't stand any clothing that is tight or rough. Have a bunch of loose linen dresses for summer, which I wear with small t-shirts. Pants all have elastic waists, and I have even bought maternity pants from Old Navy because the fabric is soft, and obviously, the elastic panel is comfortable. Buy smaller than you think you are -- they run big. Wear t-shirts under anything rough -- no wool sweater feels good against skin. I also look for really soft socks -- the two pairs of hospital socks I have are the most comfortable -- too bad we can't get those.

Hi, am a male who have dealt with RSD for 23 years now, since 1988, with the pain in my crotch, left buttock, back of thigh & foot. Having trouble finding anything to wear, especially underwear, where nearly nothing will touch my "privates." Now wear loose cotton boxers, have even tried womens panty hose, compression shorts, all without any relief. Anyone have an idea?

I wear light athletic pants for the same reason. Jeans add may too much pressure on the top of my foot. I can only wear them with shoes on. PJ pants are the most comfortable so far.
