As we age, we sometimes get stones in the salivary glands.
This can cause a swelling on the side affected. People with dry mouth from inflammation like Sjogren's or from side effects from drugs are more prone to this. If it becomes totally blocked, surgery may be needed. My doctor recommends sucking on a sour candy a couple of times a day to stimulate saliva production. Give that a try. Ear infections also can do this, or a throat infection that occurs only on one side. Painless swelling should always be evaluated because swollen lymph nodes with no pain could be lymphoma. So if it persists you really should see a doctor.

What does your neuro say about the swelling? I get it in my face and my feet, sometimes in my hands. Ice packs work, (with a towel of course), as do NSAID,s aspirin, motrin, aleve. And, motion! Try taking a walk. Get your blood circulating. Sometimes Allegra helps. (allergy prescription). That's for your neuro to answer. Sometimes, I can't get my shoes on. I'm 52 also. Call your neuro, and ask his/her advice! Here for you! BE BLESSED AND BETTER! Pete asb |

Dear Pete,
Be careful with the ice - because ice and RSD usually don't mix. Sandy |

It can come with age as well and genetics. The fat pad back there is brown fat, which we store for starvation. (there are two types of fat storage, brown and yellow.) There are lymph nodes that go up the neck from the nape, on both sides. They can become infected/swollen if something is going on in the scalp. I have seen them enlarge when kids have head lice. Ringworm may also do it. Or a staph infection in a hair follicle. Sometimes some drugs, or illnesses like Cushing's syndrome, can cause a fat pad back there.

Hi I too have a severe blocked feeling in my ear and such extreme pressure. I have severe eye pressure as well so thought it may be connected but I feel like often my entire face has so much pressure. I have had every eye and ear test possible though may go back for another mri of my brain. It may be part of the rsd and am going to ask my new pain doc but better safe then sorry. I am not sure what my point is guess that I can relate and if it is rsd I hope with the treatment for my legs it may help the other areas. Feel better

I had to have two nerve blocks done on the myofascial nerve in my neck. that was done on the side of my neck up in Philly. It was also affecting my tongue, swelling difficulty swallowing. so the procedure has become a bit of and emergency. Dr. S knew what it was immediately- he ordered the nerve blocks up there - in Philly. It had to be done twice but then it worked and the swelling went down. I too was a fat face. Think about this block with your PM, it really helped me. Good luck. and God bless, CZ |
