The swelling back there is often connected with dyslipidemia.
It can come with age as well and genetics.
The fat pad back there is brown fat, which we store for
starvation. (there are two types of fat storage, brown and yellow.)

There are lymph nodes that go up the neck from the nape, on both sides.
They can become infected/swollen if something is going on in the scalp.
I have seen them enlarge when kids have head lice. Ringworm may also do it. Or a staph infection in a hair follicle.

Sometimes some drugs, or illnesses like Cushing's syndrome, can cause a fat pad back there.

Hi I too have a severe blocked feeling in my ear and such extreme pressure. I have severe eye pressure as well so thought it may be connected but I feel like often my entire face has so much pressure. I have had every eye and ear test possible though may go back for another mri of my brain. It may be part of the rsd and am going to ask my new pain doc but better safe then sorry. I am not sure what my point is guess that I can relate and if it is rsd I hope with the treatment for my legs it may help the other areas. Feel better
