Default Vision Loss

Okay, this is getting weird.

While working on the computer today, I started getting a blurry cresent-shaped area of flashing lights in the left field of vision of both eyes that progressed to where it consumed about 40% of my vision. Don't know if I could have driven a car at that point. It lasted about 1/2 hour then as quick as it came, went away.

I talked to my neurologist who thought it was an atypical migraine (absolutely no other symptoms), then talked to my PM doc who has treated RSD/CRPS patients for 30 years who said it was definately related to RSD/CRPS. I have NEVER had anything like this happen for my last 53 years!

Has anyone else had anything similar to this and been told it was RSD/CRPS related?

It was a little un-nerving....

Heart

My vision has become blurry and I find it difficult to focus, even while wearing reading glasses. Also, my eyes are dry, burn, and itch;also, I purchased eye drops to ease these symptoms.

I hope you don't experience this scary eye issue again,Dubious.
Take care,
Dew~

Migraine aura without headache is possible. I had one years ago.

I really think you should get a good check up at the opthamologists office. They can do a field test, and other things to see what is happening.

Pituitary adenomas are pretty common, and many have them with no symptoms. But if they press on one optic nerve you can get symptoms in that field of vision.

Also optic neuritis can be treated. Optic neuritis may occur in patients with very low B12 levels. This is easily fixed.

I'd get checked by a doctor, if it were me.

Since I developed RSD and I don't have blurry but anyhow I have been to 11 eye specialists and 40 plus apts for my vision and pain. Also other specialties too. The verdict is still out in whether it is part of the rsd or not. What I do know is that my symptoms of bleph/dry eye don't go with the pain I have. My neuro did another mri of my brain to make sure I did not have something pressing or fluid cause I was starting to get migraines. You may want ask about that as well. Are you on any new meds?

Hi Dubious!!!

I have exacty what you are describing... I was completely scared as it happened the first time while I was driving on the interstate...

My MD sent me to an eye specialist....he does mostly eye surgerys for various diseases of the eye.

After running many, many tests on my eyes... He found nothing out of the norm... but had me describe to him exactly what was happening...

Turned out I was and still have Occular Migraines with Aura's. The Aura's alert me to an upcoming Occular Migraine which eventually turn in to full blown migraine headaches.

He attributed this all to RSD affecting the blood vessels to my eyes and brain.

Please get checked as MrsD suggested... rule out everything you can.

Big thanks to all who responded. This experience was quite impressive and got my attention. I most certainly have an appointment scheduled with the neurologist who already is ordering an MRI. The PM doc is convinced about the RSD connection but also wanted the MRI for obvious reasons.

I certainly appreciate all of you! Strange disease, isn't it? And I thought I was having enough fun with just the pain, discoloration, swelling, weakness and burning.....Wow, what a trip!

I hope your MRI is clean.

Don't discount vascular eye problems, tho.

I had a stroke in my left eye about 10 yrs ago before I started on my supplements. I think it was due to high homocysteine levels.

I had an angiogram for both eyes at that time, and it showed a clot in the right branch vein. It cleared up in 6mos, and my night vision was more affected than the daytime. The retina itself was
pretty normal...only minimal ischemia for my age and blood pressure issues.

I'd get a B12 run and if lower than 500, start taking it daily orally. Low B12 levels impact both the optic nerve and the vessels in the eye (inflammation).

I have a B12 thread here:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread85103.html

These forums here at NeuroTalk just constantly have people coming in with this issue. It is far more common than doctor's realize.

Sorry to hear about your blurred vision, Dubious! I'm glad to hear your Neurologist and PM Doctor have ordered an MRI just to be on the safe side and hope it comes back clear and you feel better soon.

I had a nasty time with blurred vision nearly 2 years ago, however mine was caused by a medication. My doctor prescribed me Amitriptyline to try and help me sleep but I suffered from blurred vision as a side effect. It was so bad that I actually fell getting out of the bath tub as I was seeing double of everything. I tried getting onto my bath board but because my vision was blurred, I missed it and slipped and knocked my right arm pretty hardly.

My RSD spread to my arm after that injury. Almost straight after I fell, my arm started going purple and swollen and closed into a fist due to the Dystonia I have.

I went to the Opticians with my mum who said that my pupils were extremely dialated due to the med and told me to get in touch with my PM Doctor ASAP and come off the med. My Doctor weaned me off the Amitriptyline and my vision went back to normal within a few days after I came off it thankfully.

I still get blurred vision now which my doctor believes is caused by the RSD as i'm not on any medications as none helped me. My vision isn't blurred all the time, but I do get bad bouts of it where everything appears to be blurred. I also tend to get a lot of floaters in my eyes that can be extremely annoying.

I hope your vision is better today and that you are doing OK! Please let us know when you have the MRI and what you find out - i'm hoping and praying that everything comes back clear for you!

Default Vision Loss

Dubious! so glad to hear about your upcoming apt. I have not had what you did, however I do always get those floaters! They drive me crazy! When I am outside and look up into the sky and see these black bubbles just floating around everywhere. Also my Dad had this before he had glacoma, then he lost his left eye to a retinal detacahment.(Sp?) Anyway I have to be so carefull about taking care of my eyes. I think we all do since we all have RSD. Please Take Care! Breezy55

Hi Dubious,
I've had those symptoms just prior to a migraine headache. That was pre-rsd days.
I do have vision blurriness now with RSD. In the morning, when I wake up, I have matter on both eyes in both corners. I'm going to make an appointment with my eye Dr. Also will discuss it with my Dr. on my next appointment. Hope you have a nice weekend. loretta
