I have a question for Caucasian people who get offended by the term "white."
I have a Lakota friend who is involved in writing up historical markers. She's stuck on the following sentence, and they won't allow her to leave it as is: "Sitting Bull fought the white people." She's told it's too offensive. How else are you supposed to describe a battle scene and participants? I don't think "Gold Diggers" or "Terrorists" would go over very well. They weren't Americans or settlers because it wasn't the USA at the time. No one can give her any answers. Got any suggestions? Thanks. |

Oh good grief! We live in a "politically correct era" that at times can be quite annoying.
"Sitting Bull fought the white people" IMHO, there is nothing offensive about the use of "white people" and I don't really think anything else will sound right. Tell your friend good luck

The Wampanoags were often referred to as "white Indians" due to their light skin and are believed to have descended from Viking explorers. John Hyanno's mother is said to have been a princess of the Narragansett tribe and the daughter of Canonicus who was a sachem of some renown. Canonicus along with one Miantonomi were the two principals in deeding over what is now called Rhode Island to Roger Williams.
There is no proof of Bearse's gypsy ancestry. However, Jacobus' assertion that http://www.murrah.com/gen/bearse.htm

This particular battle did not include the Calvary. They were just white folks looking for some gold and a place to build a home, despite the warnings. |

According to the date, the property was not yet a part of the United States - it was still "wild." A treaty had been signed by the government promising to stay off the property, so technically they could not be called settlers. Would you accept someone "settling" on your front yard - or kicking you out altogether?
Couldn't really call them "miners" because they weren't professionals sent out to do a job. They were just going through people's homes and destroying property in the hopes of making a fortune. |

Everyone seems to accept that term. For myself, I like Polish. though far back I had a leaving England relative who didn't make it to the U.S. because he or his wife, I forget, got sick and they had to stay in Leiden.
