When people complain about illegal immigration, it seems as if they are thinking mainly about Mexicans and South Americans. I am not saying this is done with racial overtones, not at all. I am hearing that the reason for the illegal immigration is because of the desire to put support their families back "home." These are third world countries with a great deal of poverty. As a nation, we are nation building in Iraq. I suggest, as an issue, we really need to look at Mexico and their President. He has taken on the drug cartels and it has become a huge struggle for power. Where is the National Guard? Where is the money promised for the Border Patrol? Can we stop the Shi'ites? Can we stop the civil war between the Sunnis and the Shi'ites? Which group is called insurgents? Who are the terrorists? Can our troops tell the difference? Do they wear uniforms? If we don't fight them there, we will have to fight them over here... We are in it to win it...what are we going to win? Our military is broken. We are sending in troops that have been deemed medically unfit to return to duty. But back to illegal immigration and why these people are coming into our country. Back to the National Guard and the Border Patrol. Mexico is a lot closer. The drug cartels are lethal. We have to look at this issue, it is a lot closer than we think and even with Iraq, it is only 20% of the coverage on our news programs. Talking about the issues of illegal immigration only seem to deal with people coming here and the burden of health care and education. No one is discussing what is going on so close to the USA. I read the paper every day, there is very little coverage in newsprint. Mexico or Iraq. Propping up a failed government. Alienating a segment of the population (yes, these illegal immigrants are here. A fact, like it or not). Deny health care? Deny education? I do not just see adults when I think of health care and education. Which two countries do we invest our taxes? Mexico is a heckova lot closer. |

www.gcnlive.com radio seems to talk about crime on mexican border
the bible does say "be kind to the stranger in your midst" so whether they are legal or illegal we dont hate them the illegals arent to blame as much as liberals and neocons who allow them to come and use them as some issue clinton deported more than bush possibly-the politicians make this some big issue like"we are so good vote for us we are kinder"theyre self righteous -but how many can they take in ? it doesnt seem right why are 20 close Mexicans and 20 rich arabs who have plane fair more worthy to be here than 40 poor people in serbia or somewhere? who is to decide ? and remember carters mariolito boatlift ? that sucked too if obama gets in i hope he doesnt do that

It would be appreciated to return to the topic without seeing this thread degenerate into a "bash certain nationalities and /or politicans and/or political opinions" endless complaint! Discussing the issues is fine, and OP openly invited discussion. but negative slurs is not in keeping with the tone of the OP

just a quick post to explain that I made the edit above as the post followed after my request above to keep the discussion from turning into personal negative remarks against other political groups or other nationalities etc
I am going to be editing any posts by anyone from now on, where there may be negative slurs or defaming remarks about any nationality, ethnicity, race, political figure or political party or political persuasion members are to please remember that we have many different nationalities, races and political viewpoints on this board and to respect that. To disagree agreeably is to debate and that is ok. we dont expect everyone to hold the same views. but we cant have the feelings of other members disregarded when posts become personally negative toward their ethnicity or political view. this is a great forum and the lively debate and discussion is both interesting, informative and fun. Let's keep it that way please

Before Houston we lived in Miami. Talk about living in a foreign country. Ordering at a McDonalds in english was next to impossible. I worked with this one engineer who kept his raft in his back yard as a souvenir of his trip from Cuba. Before Miami - Toledo Ohio. Mexicans driving cars with Florida plates showed up every summer to pick tomatos. This was 25 years ago... The town I lived in in Germany (Schwaebisch Gmuend) was ~25% Turkish - ya didn't go into this part of town. I didn't know their legal status. Oh yeah. I guess I was a foreigner. I don't really have an opinion on this issue. Their presence would be more negative during a depression. I am NOT going to ask the guys who mow my lawn every week for their SSN cards... Tom |

you knew their ethnicity how?? did they have signs on their Florida plated cars saying "we are illegally here from Mexico"?? I live in Florida and it is a melting pot for sure but honestly...Miami is also over flowing with purple-haired aged dears of very definite European ethnicity...... and I have never once had a problem anywhere in Florida ordering anything in English...

We left Miami (we lived south of Miami - in unincorporated Dade near Homestead) in part because of the language barrier. We lived there for 9 years - language is a big issue (unless you speak Spanish). I worked with engineers that have been here since the early 60's that couldn't speak english. This is real. The people with purple hair occupy a small portion of Miami - Miami Beach. Language is not an issue anywhere else in Florida. We still have a condo near St. Pete (Treasure Island) and I have alot of family in Lakeland. This kind of thing is not new. I don't know what things are like today in Hamtramck or Dearborn Heights, MI, but when I was growing up these towns were predominantly Polish and Arab speaking, respectively. Tom |
