ARGHHHHHH! This is sick. I mean come on, we pay taxes for this type of situation. So what if he went out for fun, so frickin what? If he's lost and has yet to be found his family should not pick up the bill. For crying out loud, what is wrong with with this picture?

Many people voluntarily raise their hand to participate in dangerous activities. Think of soldiers, policemen, firemen, rescue crews, commercial pilots, private pilots, etc. Should we tax their families when they come up missing, even if it takes years to find them, or not? We can't have it both ways, really. This man was a pilot and a very good one. I am sure he didn't go out with the intention of being MIA or dead.

I think there's some blurring of the subject/topic happening here.
I'm sure we all agree that search & rescue is a important and necessary thing.
It has nothing to do with "who" you are or if you are wealthy.

I do think that the wealthy would be able to pull in more resources though connections, than the avg person, for a longer search time.

It can get confusing to discuss because often so many various agencies are working together private, volunteers, local government & even military.

What if we remove the pilot/aviation scenario from the topic and talk about "all" types of S & R- and if any billing should be done?

I'll just say that if I was a multimillionaire and was found alive & rescued - I would for sure pay or donate something...
and if I was not found or found deceased I would hope my family would do the same. That's just how I feel about it.

Really? Then as I see it by your post, when someone gets lost unintentionally due to a snowstorm or an accident or their airplane has a catastrophic engine failure and crashes and a search and rescue mission is launched, they should have to pay for that mission? Even though their tax dollars and fees have already been put into a fund earmarked for this? I don't think so.

Are you implying they should just be left out there if they cannot pay for the Search and Rescue Mission? That's just ridiculous.

If a skier or snowboarder goes off trail (a marked trail) and the Ski Patrol have to go looking for them, that's a totally different story. Those fees are asked to be reimbursed.

I agree Jo55. That was how I was reading it too. There are so many missing people in this country, resources are limited, and most people aren't in favor of raising taxes.

Knowing our current economic struggle, if I were the wife of a "rich tycoon" I would offer to cover the cost too. I also wouldn't be outraged if I received a bill for services rendered.

I know for Mt Hood -
They do have GPS rentals available for the hikers/climbers - only 5 dollars to rent I believe.
They probably should give them out free so climbers will use it & it would save time & resources when a rescue is needed.
Then they just turn them back in after the climb.

But some don't want to use that extra bit of security
Or they don't think they will need it...until it's too late.

In 2002 a chopper crashed on Mt Hood while trying to help with a rescue.

My husbands family are fishermen and I can personally tell you they don't make that much. Their seasons are getting shorter and shorter and the corporations are running the regulars out of business. If you knew what the fisherman get paid per pound compared to what we as consumers pay at the store you would be really surprised. It is a very dangerous, hard job that many do as there is no other type of work in the small towns where many of them come from. Hope this does not offend as it was not intended...Sue
__________________

Sue no offense, just different perspective. I am a life long sport fisherman, I grew up fishing Lake Erie and the waters surrounding Cleveland Ohio, and parts of the Georgian Bay in Ontario.

Walleye were pretty much gone from Lake Erie as I was growing up in the 50`s, 60`s, and early 70`s. Many reasons for it, pollution, lost of habitat due to shoreline activity and development, and commercial fishing. Over harvest, over legal limits and a slap on the hands to repeat offfenders.

Many public debates here over the years, I know the costs involved, the price s paid to the the guys catching the fish vs. the middlemans markup and profit.

Walleye sold here goes for 7 to 10 dollars a pound, caught in Lake Erie but not in Ohio waters because Ohio bought out the commercial fishing licenses for the walleye commercial fishing fleet.

Their standard argument for years had been they were not taking enough walleye to hurt the population, but little or no walleye fishing in Ohio waters of lake erie for many years, except the spring spawning run up western ohio tributaries of lake erie.

With in 3 or 4 years of the commercial fishing ban? Lake Erie was full of walleyes. Hmmm? Many more dollars in revenue generated by resident and non resident fishing licenses, tourist dollars from sportfisherman, the taxes on fishing tackles sales dedicated to the improvement of habitat, access to the waters, and the enjoyment of thousands of anglers fishing for walleye in the area than ever was the benefit from the commercial fisherman taking an American resource for profit!

Not meant to offend, just a completely different view. I am a life long fisherman, for sport and an occasional meal. I quit my membership in B.A.S.S. because I felt they focus too much on fishing for bedding bass(during the spawn). If as they claim they are interested in the health of bass fishing they should be pushing for closed seasons during the spawn instead of focusing on the catches of the brooding stock. A bass taken of it`s bed during the spawn usually means the loss of those eggs. For a weigh in? for prize money? I don`t fish for spawning fish, just a different view of sportsman.

Cheryl, I stand corrected, it wasn`t a risky flight, just part of the process for another risky adventure.
