If you ever wondered what the big deal about Alaskan Oil is, here it is. The North Slope is a barron wasteland. It's time to drill. JMHO.

Neither Candidate wants to open ANWR, therefore, the biggest oil reserve in this country will continue to sit there. The natural gas continues to be piped back into the ground. Let's do alternative energy, but in the meantime, lets get the oil we own and become self-sufficient again!!!

I'm leaning Mccain, but the popular vote will likely go to Obama. I don't see either fixing this mess any time soon however.

Doesn't it take years to actually start seeing any production from newly drilled wells , and aren't our refineries outdated or we don't have enough functioning ones??
I think a radio talk show guy was talking about this- last year, so i don't recall all the details.
Plus having to pass all the regulations , inspections etc.

Why not forget about sucking all the oil out of the earth and focus on new or alternative energy sources?
At some point the oil will be all gone anyway so why wait until then?

Who knows , maybe the big oil companies already have a plan - use up all the oil first - and then they'll begin to look at & use these alternative sources.

Right now on the North Slope....they could drill new area's with exhisting equipment. It's side drilling. Cutting over underground and sucking from another exit point. We know where all the oil is...we just need to get busy. Should have done it years ago.

That said, we are also leading the nation in starting wind farms and hydroelectricity. We should do all of it.

Refineries are running at capacity. Any oil sucked out of the ground will not be available until 2025.

How long do you think it will be until the oil rigs are built? Will it come in time to bring gas prices down in the NEAR future or the DISTANT future?

The real issues are oil dependency, our habits with regard to oil, no urgency to develop alternative sources.

Environmental groups are against this drilling. You look at a part of the Alaskan wilderness as wasteland but it is probably part of an ecosystem wherein the animals there do not view it as a wasteland.

If the liberals had not stopped oil development 20 years ago, we wouldn't be here now. Keep dragging feet and it won't EVER get better.

I wouldn't blame this one on "liberals." People from all groups have been saying we need to stop our addiction to oil for over 30 years now. The problem is when the price goes down, so does the urgency to rid ourselves of our addiction. If the price of gas were to drop to 99 cents tomorrow, don't you know everyone would be out there filling up their big SUVs and planning road trips.
