Okay, I may be "cheating" just a little bit, but I ran across this interesting page after Tkrik (sp) passed on some cool brain exercises on the same site:

For unset stomachs my Mom gave you a large teaspoon of Coke syrup. They used to sell it in a bottle at the pharmacy

Coca Cola not cocaine.
|
LOL! I figured you meant cola syrup. ;)
|
The "old" Coke syrup DID have a cocaine base. The Coke syrup of today does not.
Anyone got any of those old bottles tucked away? :D I wonder what size they sold it in...quarts?:p It is said that there were many, many addicts out there, especially since it was marketed to housewives who were at home, no BC, lots of kids, often married to a man who was chosen for them by their parents. They were feeling "poorly" a lot of the time! |
Wow, is that for real?
This Aussie always thought that was one of those urban myths. Interesting. Thanks for that. |

They really did. I wish they still did, I for one could use a pick-me-up. :p Peppermint is good for more than breath - it's for every digestive problem. A mint or some tea for upset stomach or whatever. My mom used to give us girls brandy for cramps. They didn't have pamprin back then. Lavender is good for skin. I steep some lavender water for myself and my dog if we're dry and itchy, like in the winter. It's also an interesting flavor on cookies. Chamomille to relax ans ease muscle stiffness. Make it weak and even babies can have a sip (helps them if they're cholicky or constipated). I swear by loading up on vitamin C for colds, adding extra garlic to the diet and having a hot toddy (tea with lemon, honey and whiskey). |

I have found that Altoids mints work wonders when I have a cold. The peppermint is so strong it relieves the nasal and chest congestion temporarily so I can breath. |
Yep...Coke actually got its name from cocaine...I remember when I was very young people would drink coke with BC or Goody's headache powder. The combination was a quick 'pick me up' and got rid of the pain.
I don't see how anyone can swallow those nasty tasting powders...I shudder at the thought. Clove oil is good for toothaches...it numbs the nerve. |
