Personally, I don't know Frank. I do know if the SSI is lower than the disability pension then you'll get both. If it's higher (your work) they subract whatever is the difference. At least that's how I remember it. You'll be able to pay the disability difference off with the back pay. So, hopefully the difference among the two isn't too much and the payback is not as much as your thinking. Second, I thought SSI was an automatic for Medicare? Things sure have changed since Jim went this way with SSDI.
Did they actually tell you you would lose your disability if your approved? My mom wasn't told that when she was going for disability. They just said whatever the difference is they would adjust to it. Now, if her SSDI was way above the work disability then yea, she would not get her work check anymore. Life insurance. We were told by a gazillion insurance companies that if Jim wasn't SPMS he would qualify for life insurance. So, if your still RRMS you may be able to pick up insurance easier. PS: I don't think we're going to lose SS in the economic mess.
