We only wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time. The rest we hang onto crying that we can someday wear it, fit into it, or it will be needed.

"In 17th century America, the average woman gave birth to 13 children"

Most of whom did not survive infancy. Disease and still birth was rampant then and the only birth control was breast feeding and "natural" method. The leading cause of death among colonial women was childbirth.

Add to that, many of the women bearing large broods were slave women exploited by their owners.

The brutal reality of then versus current science and the octo-mom is sooooooooooooooooooo unrelated, I scoff at thee. http://www.clipartof.com/images/thumbnail/728.gif

Kitt 04-01-2009 01:44 PM

One reason they had so many children was because they needed them to help out on the farm. And also, many children did die from one thing or the other including birth. They didn't have the medical care we have today. And they weren't all born at the same time.

And as mentioned, the only birth control was breast feeding and "natural" method as After My Nap posted. And quite a number of women did die from childbirth. You don't have to go back to Colonial times either. It happened in my great grandparents day and also my grandparents day and my parents day. Just my thoughts.

Aarcyn 04-01-2009 04:07 PM

My great-great grandmother has 18 children. Five survived. My distant cousin has done a genealogy tree and has found 250 descendants spanning the globe. We are having the first ever "reunion" on 4th of July in Toronto.

Just imagine, one couple and so many children.

lor 04-03-2009 03:46 PM

(Aarcyn, I got a site via Email & went & talked to several people. Most were far related to me. I did my tree back to 1630 Germany--my great great grandfather. They came to USA & settled in a town near me. When you think of it, USA is very young...a baby)

To keep an ice cream cone from dripping, stuff a miniature marshmallow into the bottom of the cone.

Naturally I had to try it out at the Dairy Queen. :D

Um, Thumper, honey, it's been years since I've seen one, but, aren't DQ cones flat and rather spongey/absorbent? Just trying to picture this marshmallow.

This may require additional studies from you.

Today I learned that medical waiting rooms/areas do not typically have wall clocks due to the necessary maintenance of them (batteries/Daylight Saving Time/climbing & cleaning). To appreciate the situation, imagine being the maintenance crew in a hospital, etc. Now imagine paying by the hour to have all of the clocks maintained.

Oh yeah..That's the answer they WANT you to believe. They don't have clocks because they don't want patients up in arms about how long they have to wait. What if they started charging for their valuable time?

Twinkletoes 04-03-2009 11:56 PM

I don't know if this is "fascinating," but (IMHO) it does fall under the category of "ya learn something new every day!"

My carpet cleaner showed me this trick when I asked him why the rug in front of my kitchen sink always had to be drug back into place. It only travels one direction, even though we walk both ways on it.

He asked for a pencil and paper. Then he put the paper on the floor and vigorously rolled the pencil forward and backward on it with the palm of his hand (picture yourself playing with PlayDoh and making a snake).

The paper only traveled in the direction that the throw rug does!!!

He said carpet installers use this trick to make sure they are laying the carpet all the same direction.

That's what I thought, too, but my sister, who is an interior designer, and did all the new Pfizer labs (right before she and all others were pfired) told me that it's truly a cost factor. She added that most everyone carries some kind of clock now, whether a watch, a phone, PDA, game, laptop, etc.

Nappy-
I was at the DMV last week and noticed they didn't have clocks either, when I FINALLY got to the window I asked about it and the girl said "we aren't sure if it is so the public doesn't watch them, or the staff" and winked.

At five minutes and six seconds after 4 a.m. on the 8th of July this year,
the time and date will be: 04:05:06 07-08-09.

This will never happen again.

(I guess that will happen in the p.m. too --- at least in the US)

Speaking of hidden talents, it is a MYTH that humans "use only 10% of their brains' functionality". The brain is so complex, it is in full function almost 100% of the time.

A recent CSI:NY had a story line revolving around a restaurant in NY serving these. The "murder" involved eating an octopus the wrong way--evidently if you do it wrong--they are swallowed alive-- you are sunk.

Here is a video illustrating it if you didn't see the CSI:NY epidsode:

Edit to add:
from: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/f...roducts/4188/2
octopus:
glycemic LOAD: 2
inflammatory index: 72= mildly anti-inflammatory
good source of protein
good source of Omega-3
good source of minerals
0 carbs
good source of choline

I have eaten cooked octopus..the little ones that are put in salads. But I don't
think I could deal with ALIVE!

I JUST WATCHED THIS VIDEO.

I could not believe what I just watched. The guy ate A LIVE OCTOPUS.

My mouth is still open. I cannot believe what I just witnessed.

GROSS!!!

Yuck

Why the heck do donkeys kill anyone?

I think of donkeys and I see calm benign creatures calmly walking by.
Same thing goes with Penguins. Alan says "Penguins are killers".

Penquins??? Donkeys???

GOOD LORD!!!

I imagine it's because people aren't careful around donkeys and get kicked in the head. You know, while trying to shoe a mule. Penguins? No clue!

We have alot of donkeys in the out lying areas like Red Rock and the donkeys will stand in the road. There have been many accidents with cars running into them.

A good friend of mine hit one while on a motorcycle and it almost killed him...Killed the donkey though...Sue

This is cool, I just learned that up until the recent past, the D.C. fire department used to wash all the statues with the fire hoses. I love it!
