The above link that I cited was taken from Federal News Radio; open to all. The highlighted "Memo" in the article takes you to the SSA website.

People must be going out of their minds. All this not knowing will be our undoing.

Hi.

I just this minute read the following in a news bulletin. I do not understand what this means.

"WASHINGTON - The House has passed legislation conditioning a $2.4 trillion increase in the nation's borrowing cap on a tea party-backed plan to require immediate spending cuts and a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget.

The 234-190 vote sends the "cut, cap and balance" plan to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where it has virtually no chance of passing.

With the House tally cast, attention is returning to efforts in the Senate to provide President Barack Obama authority to impose an increase in the debt limit without approval by Congress and on a new Senate "Gang of Six" proposal to cut the deficit by almost $4 trillion over the coming decade."

Can someone translate this for me?

Thanks much, Mel

Any legislation concerning spending must originate in the house of Representatives. If passed, it must then move to the Senate, where it can be debated and modified, before it goes to the President. Since the Senate is still dominated by Democrats, passage of the House bill as it stands is unlikely, especially since the President has already threatened to veto and has indicated his unwillingness to mess with SS and Medicare.

Don't shoot me if I am wrong, but this is my understanding. I find it disturbing that the TP has had this much influence, but in my opinion without a basic grasp of economics and government.

Color me stupid...and I know most people can understand this stuff....but does anyone, in english, have an idea what the possible outcome might be?
Please don't be mistaken, those of you who are helping us with your knowledge, you are greatly appreciated....I am just dumb and I don't understand the terminology and all that stuff.
Again, I know most people can understand it. I am sorry for my ignorance, but I am dying to know which way this whole thing is looking like it may go.
Thank you!!!!

my unqualified opinion.........
nomatter what they decide on the overall debt/budget, one thing I feel sure on....with a 2012 election on the horizon, none of them want to risk the ire of a large & consistent voting block by not getting their SS payments out on time!

I agree. They won't mess with SS......but I hate it that any of them are using this as ammo to get their point across. They're causing such alarm within the most vulnerable population of people.

All of my friends who are over the age of 65 or are disabled are walking around wringing their hands going "Am I going to lose my house, how will I pay for food"

Shame on our government. That's all I can say

They were saying on CNN last night that if the debt ceiling is raised, over a million people will lose their jobs. Well,if they don't raise the debt ceiling, over 50 million people are in jeopardy of not receiving SS benefits and no one seems too know about Medicare. Its a no-win situation.
