I think at this point, you need to self-refer to a neurologist, one whom your surgeon doesn't personally know, get an eval and neurodiagnostic studies to help zero in on the problem. Your description of burning pain is disturbing and while RSD/CRPS is very unlikely, statistically, it probably should be a consideration until otherwise ruled out. In the very unlikely event that it is, you are approaching the point of no return where intervention is no longer helpful. Besides, a C5 root problem wouldn't likely refer into the forearm and wrist. Reaching up, by the way, should be a relieving position for cervical root pain and in fact is an orthopedic test called Bakody's. There are just a whole host of issues that need to be considered, i.e. brachial plexus, peripheral nerve issues, recurrent disc, etc., and you are not likely going to figure it out without a neuro consult, so don't wait too long. Good luck!
Thank you. I did talk to my dr today and I am having another MRI done and he is also referring me to someone for cortisone shots in my shoulder as my 3 week post op MRI showed bursitis in my shoulder. I didn't have this problem prior to surgery and cannot accept that bursitis is the problem. When I woke up from surgery my arm was dead weight. I've lowly been able to move it and now having horrible pain when I move it up. Haven't been able to move it out since surgery. My dr does not think its coming from the neck, not a pinched nerve because you normally get relief when you move it up if its a pinched nerve. I don't know what the two things you mentioned are and he hasn't said anything like that but I am going o do some research. My dr did say the pain could be because I'm not fused....but most ppl aren't fused at 15 weeks so I don't understand that.

It does not at all sound like it (arm symptoms) is coming from your neck and while you also may have a bursitis issue that is limiting your shoulder mobility (your body is allowed to have as many problems as it wants), there is nothing that you have mentioned that would explain forearm and especially wrist pain and burning. See a neurologist of your choice, not your surgeon's for a more clear opinion. TOS as Jomar suggested could also be a cause (and ruled in or out by a neurologist) but with your timely onset following neck surgery, a causal relationship with TOS would be low on the list, I would think.

Have you had a MRI of your shoulder? I did and it just shows bursitis and arthritis. I am going to get the cortisone shots. I'll try anything! When did you have your neck surgery and how long has your arm pain being hurting? Also, does the area around your collar bone hurt? Mine is throbbing! Dang it man, when does it get better??

I can totally relate. I read where someone said they were ready to have their arm amputated. I feel the same way. We just have to hang in there! It has to get better. I'm almost 15 weeks post op, what about you?

I just sent you a private message but can't find it now, still trying to figure this board out. Just wanted to see if you have had a MRI on your shoulder? I did and dr says I have bursitis and arthritis n shoulder. I did not think this was causing such severe pain, but I've been reading about it today and I talked to a friend who doesn't have neck problems but does have bad arthritis in shoulder. Symptoms are very very similar, including the pain in collar bone area. I'm going to try the cortisone shots, I've got nothing to lose. I don't understand how I woke up from surgery with his problem, but I did read bursitis can be caused from trauma...pretty sure being strapped to that table like we were during surgery could cause trauma. I know it doesn't explain all my pain, and I'm still very worried about my neck pain, buy I'm having another MRI on my neck and having more nerve test. I'm just hoping my dr is right and my neck pain will stop when I fuse....

yes they did do and "MRI"i think 2or 3..and yes it was "arthritis".what they did what surgically just remove that "arthritic"bone.they use to give me those cortisone, but for me it made the pain worst!!..but you know when disc5&6 are damage.the symptoms are always the same,in the same area and along with "arthritis"

What did your nerve test show? Have you had a MRI on shoulder? I'm going to try cortisone shots in my shoulder. Got nothing to loose....my MRI shows bursitis. I didnt think that could possibly be it but reading about it makes me think twice. I'll try anything!
