Default Great explanation

It may help to think of it this way: Dependence is physical—the body becomes chemically acclimated/accustomed to a medication such that abrupt reduction/cessation causes physical withdrawal; Addiction is psychological—evidenced by cravings, continued ab/use despite harm to onesself/others (usually family members).

Thanks Doc, that makes me feel better.

It also means that perhaps my brother isn't addicted to alcohol, just dependant on it.

The definitions with respect to alcohol are slightly different, and there is a lot of crossover.

Alcohol dependence

Alcohol abuse

Alcoholism

I don't know that the label really matters; IMO if his drinking is having a negative effect on him (including longterm health issues) or those around him or who care about him, there may be a problem.
