Thanks Doc, that makes me feel better.

It also means that perhaps my brother isn't addicted to alcohol, just dependant on it.

The definitions with respect to alcohol are slightly different, and there is a lot of crossover.

Alcohol dependence

Alcohol abuse

Alcoholism

I don't know that the label really matters; IMO if his drinking is having a negative effect on him (including longterm health issues) or those around him or who care about him, there may be a problem.
