This brings back many memories of when Scott was in middle school. I dont think he is comfortable with me posting the paper he wrote in high school about his experiences in middle school just yet. BUT i was up there almost every day on the principal about the kids that were bullying Scott and his buddies.
The principal was good and he did do something about it. Scott didn't always tell people when things were going bad. I remember one time specifically he told one of his friends he was going to go home and end it all cause he was so tired of it. His friend told a counselor and the counselor called us. He was seeing a psychologist at that time so we got him in for an emergency appointment. I think the turning point for Scott was when he became active in the choir. He sang a solo during one of the performances and the kids realized what talent he had. That yes he had tourettes but tourettes was not who he was. I look at Scott today and see a very caring sensitive young man who loves the underdog. I cant tell you how proud i am of both of my kiddos.

((((Vicky)))) as rough as times have been... I can't imagine anyone else being the mom of your children... YOU are blessed with having them and THEY are blessed with having you (and hubby!)....
yes... as rough as times have been for you dear lady.... you have, indeed, persevered! It warms my heart BFF ... I can't thank you enough for sharing and writing about your bullying situations. I don't think enough people know how many good folks have been ridiculed because they were judged as being different. It makes me sick The bullies need help... but sadly, like an alcoholic, they need some pretty darn tough intervention. They and their families need to recognize the bully need help and quick! It seems that the parents of the bullies are often oblivious to their kid's sick mind. Sigh... |

Sins of the Father
by W.D. Ehrhart Today my child came home from school in tears. A classmate taunted her about her clothes, and the other kids joined in, enough of them to make her feel as if the fault was hers, as if she can't fit in no matter what. A decent child, lovely, bright, considerate. It breaks my heart. It makes me want someone to pay. It makes me think—O Christ, it makes me think of things I haven't thought about in years. How we nicknamed Barbara Hoffman "Barn," walked behind her through the halls and mooed like cows. We kept this up for years, and not for any reason I could tell you now or even then except that it was fun. Or seemed like fun. The nights that Barbara must have cried herself to sleep, the days she must have dreaded getting up for school. Or Suzanne Heider. We called her "Spider." And we were certain Gareth Schultz was queer and let him know it. Now there's nothing I can do but stand outside my daughter's door listening to her cry herself to sleep.

He got caught throwing rocks at,. being mean to, and teasing another child on the playground!!! Oh my.... From what I heard he was dealt with swiftly when caught, he lost his recess time... I wonder how long he has been doing this and where did he learn to be so mean to others??? He's only 6!?!?! Are there children younger than 6 that are bullies?? Are there children younger than 6 that are being bullied??? Our children need help!!! They need our help! They need our LOVE!!! Abbie

That's disturbing. Maybe he could use some counselling.

I agree!! It is disturbing!!
He has a little brother (16 months). I worry about him!! B has always been a little agressive but I always marked it up to being a little boy but this is beyond being a little boy... I personally can't do anything about it... and his dad and I don't see eye to eye... so I can't say anything to him... I can only pray that he gets help and changes his ways now. Abbie

They have to be accountable for their actions. I think there should be classes in school on bullying...they could show cartoons on the damage bullying does (are there any?) Read books about it...(are there any)?

I don't know what the program is called (my sister would know) but the schools in her area introduce wee babies into the classrooms so that the children can recognize that everyone starts off as a baby ... who is different. They watch the baby grow through the year learning a lot about differences and tolerance. I don't know about the success of the program but if I find any more information, I'll post it here.
If I could be so bold to say this - Kids are a product of their environment... they are what they learn... and sadly we sometimes need to look, first, at the caregivers ... but... not always... this is such a sensitive subject and I do look beyond the blaming... as its far more serious than just blame... I believe that there is far too much prejudice in our world ... and my travels have taught me it is rampant in many places in the US (sorry for speaking about this and if its offensive to anyone, I will remove the truth as I see it) I am a positive thought person and believe that we all can change.... because we want to |

((Abbie)) and others. I thought you might be interested in the links Ellen Degeneres provides on her web site, for help with bullying. The cause is near and dear to her.
