Default My dog update - thanks for well wishes

The vet did bloodtests today and his kidneys are failing. I had 3 options. We were afraid the 3 day stay in the hospital would upset him being away from us, so we took him home to try to keep him a little longer. The other option was euthanasia. If he starts eating better they will let me give him IV fluids. I have cooked organic chicken which I will mix with rice to make a low protein dog food. He doesn't like pedialyte nor chicken broth in his water, so I can't increase his fluids that way. We came home and I gave him some food he was willing to eat, but he was too weak and fell down. I let him finish it laying down and he went straight to sleep and later got up to drink and go in my bedroom. He still wants to be here so I can't do euthanasia. I am glad I can afford his treatment. He got antibiotic shot and antinausea shots today. I have take home drugs too. To top off a really rotten day my crown came off and my salivary gland swelled up. My eyes actually hurt from crying so I stayed up playing the guitar with my eyes closed. Can't let my callouses go cause I worked too hard to get em.

Edited to add...
I was thinking more about your message.

Just wanted to let you know that there is a
Pets & Wildlife Forum
here at NT which is quite busy and there are a lot of very knowledgeable people post there.

I had a cat with kidney disease (not failure) and the kitty had to have a low protein diet. After reading your message regarding the high protein diet I sort of panicked a little, but I found a site which explained it more to me.
http://waglife.com/a-healthy-waglife/kidney-failure/

Quote:
Diets for dogs with kidney failure can be split into low protein and high protein diets. Your Vet will be able to tell you which is the best, based on whether the dog is uremic or not. If your dog is uremic he/she will need a low protein diet. (Uremic means unable to get rid of some waste products by peeing). Here we deal with high protein diets which suit many dogs with kidney conditions.
Thinking of you.

Default Thanks

It means so much for your support and it makes me stronger. I know I can handle it. Thanks and hugs.

He is on a low protein diet. Basically boil chicken and add to rice, 2/3 to 3/4 rice. We humans can eat this food too since I prepared it myself. He is eating a little today and totally resisted his slurry of meds, but I did get it down him.

Salivary glands are down today too. It seems like they need anti-inflammatories to go down. I drink fresh ginger tea and pop aleves.

o Goofy... that just sucks! Was it a "chip" card... and how the heck did they get her password?

all this stuff is so darn unfair, eh?!!! grrrr.... well, I believe in karma... boo hiss to the bad people!

Its cloudy and muggy outside... and I'm going for a swim.

Rain expected for tomorrow which motivates me to do indoor jobs.

Hi Everybody

Goofy: if the bank gives you a hard time let me know. Mr. Free Kittens investigates and resolves identity and credit/debit card theft for a living, maybe he could help?

Addy: rained here almost all of Tuesday and my house is still a mess!

Tied: I am so sorry about your puppy. I had a dog pass away from kidney failure and was on the same diet. She was really old and ready to go, even still I cried for days.

Hi to Lara and lonely1 and Alffe and Pooh and anyone else I forgot.

Free Kittens

Thank you Kittens... i was shocked when the bank was very cooperative. I was expecting a big hassle but things are going quite smoothly.

Hope everybody has had a good Wednesday.
