Hi Alffe! My heart goes out to your pastor. It will be such a loss to your church without her. I go to a 12 step group for alcoholics and sometimes the odd person gets cocky and judgemental of other people in the program. I always tell my sponsees that if someone is like that to them that it is OK to tell them in a non-sarcastic way(if that is possible!) to" keep coming back, it'll get better!" ( Meaning they will eventually get it...that it is not "all about them") Usually they have a BIG resentment...some eventually understand...some do not.....but I tend to like to put the ball where it belongs and then "I" do not carry the resentment....if they insist on carrying it, then so be it! Hugs to you! Dorrie

Thumbs up

Oh Doody, Doody, Doody

You made my day - and that says a LOT!

You gave that man a little humanity. You gave him a little hope that someone cares in this world. You gave him the courage to keep fighting traffic with that one little gesture.

If only people could catch each other when we fall, huh?

Thanks for the yummy story. Now Ima go puke.

I drive down a main artery in town to and from work. It's probably THE primary street in town that people use, very very busy. So, I'm stopped at one of the major intersections for a red light. Rush hour. And there on the other side of the intersection is a youngish looking Asian man going across the highway in a wheelchair. And not a motorized wheel chair.

He gets to the other side and there is a slight upward incline to get to the sidewalk in either direction. He tried and tried and tried and couldn't get up the incline and would slowly roll back down to the street.

I was totally freaking out. Luckily, I could turn right at the intersection, which I did, parked my car fast, put on the flashers and jumped out of the car. (Opposite side of the highway from him.) So I ran to the stoplight but by this time had a red light. Traffic was whooshing by him and he was watching very carefully and hanging on tight to the wheels.

I waited for a break in the traffic and ran, stopping a few cars that tried to fleet by, and finally made it to the other side. By that time, 2 other WOMEN had pulled their cars over and were getting out of their cars. We helped push him up the hill to the sidewalk.

Meanwhile, I was watching the traffic and remembered I had several men sitting around me when I was watching this poor guy crossing the street. Did ONE MAN stop to help. No. Did they whiz by while we were trying to help him. Yes. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I don't know what his physical problem was, but the poor guy couldn't speak and kinda 'flopped' around a little. ONe of the ladies asked him several times if there was anything else we could do, and I noticed he was struggling trying to talk. He finally gave a thumbs up sign and blurted out THANK YOU. His teeth looked like rotted nubbins, I don't know how else to describe it. Had a little backpack and had gloves on, I assume because it can be difficult on your hands moving the wheels on a wheelchair.

I just gave him a partial hug and said You are very welcome.

And went back to my car.

And then I got really sad. And it made me cry a little, and I am not a crier. Not much anyway. Sit me down at anybody's funeral, and I'll cry ya a river.

I felt helpless to do anything more. And was mad that people didn't rush to help him. There was even a frigging car with 2 men in it watching him trying to get up the damned hill and they were right there next to him at the light!

Then I got mad AND sad wondering why so many people have to suffer so much. It's hot here like everywhere else, and I felt so bad for the guy.

Well, anyway...I'm just so ticked off that more people didn't try to help him and just kept roaring by him.

If you made it through this long post, I'm extremely impressed!
Doody...you are an Angel! I know that I could not of sat and watched him struggle either. It is a shame that there aren't more Doodys in the world. You are wonderful! Dorrie

Dorrie have you read The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren? There is a chapter in there about Protecting Your Church that should be required reading for a congregation IMHO. Thanks for caring.

I am not a hero but I admit to sometimes rocking. Anyone here would have done the same.

The amazing thing is that yesterday I picked up daughter and we drove to her home after work. I was telling her the story. When I got to the part where the young man gave me a thumbs up and blurted thank you, she said, "OMG Mom!!!! That's Nick!!!!!" Then she started to tell me about this wonderful young Asian boy that she went to high school with!

She said he was so sweet but had so many disabilities, but none of the kids in high school ever taunted or made fun of him. He's very nice, she said. And she said he gives thumbs up to people when everything is good.

She said he has Cerebral Palsy and has been through quite a few surgeries including carpal tunnel release on both wrists and a spine surgery. His parents are gone and he struggles living on government assistance. Oh boy, bet that's just a friggin windfall of money!

Anyway...it still ticks me off that people suffer like this and if I hear one more time that we are all sinners and paying for the 'original sin' I'll scream!

Anyone who can 'create heaven and earth' and create two human beings in a garden of eden, should have the power to keep good people safe and healthy. Original sin my ****. Someone who can create beauty and then turn into someone who decides we're all born into sin because of the 2 original sinners...well...it ticks me off.

Doody

Please don't let the hotel hear about this. They may not give you a room. They might insist on a local chaperone to watch over you and stuff Kleenex in your ears - or wipe your tears with Lollipops.
