Thumbs up

Addy - That was beauuuuuutiful. I had such a huge urge to kiss the cheeks of your little darlings - who are probably huge now. How fast time flies.

My childhood memories of Christmas aren't very good. It's not that we were poor, but my parents believed strongly in not overindulging us. Mom was real strict about not taking or having more than we need. We were only allowed one present, and it had to be something we needed. My gift was usually an ugly sweater that was "warm, sturdy and big enough to grow into." I always dreaded going back to school after Christmas break because the teacher would have us talk about what we got for Christmas. After hearing about all the toys and gifts, it was humiliating to have to show off my ugly sweater to my classmates.

I also don't overindulge my son, but I made sure he had an enjoyable Christmas while growing up. One year when he was around 3, I thought I had it all covered. When he finished opening up all his presents, he said "Mom where are your presents? Weren't you good this year?" Oops.

Christmas will be special this year. With my son coming home on leave for the holiday, he'll be both decoration and present for me.

We were poor, not dirt poor but school teachers didn't make a lot of money and there were four kids to provide for. My dad pounded it into us that family was the most important thing in this world and I've learned how much I appreciate being taught that. He always said, "I don't have much but you all can always come home to live." Those roots go really deep. I miss him.

And I'd like to state again that old age isn't for sissies. Will explain more later.

And yep KathyM....we got stuff like new underwear!
You will have a joyous Christmas with your son there.

but i always LOVED getting my special package of new undies on christmas. cuz they were pretty and had the days of the week on them.

my kiddos have gone back and forth now. some years when i was a single mom were very scarce. the year lil'monkey was in the hospital a few days before christmas...well..if it hadn't been for friends, they wouldn't have any gifts..just love.

then we had many very good years. until last year and this year. it makes it hard when most of their friends are getting laptops...ipods ...those type of things. but they will be fine.

the best gift this year...my daughter flying home and surprising them. LOL...i mailed her bf's gift and gift bag stuffed with tissue paper for her. sneaky huh?
