Boy, it's really hard to read that, about them laughing at your difficulties. I so understand how it feels. My family is similar. My cousin's husband was a trial lawyer for some big medical firm, so he's beaten down a lot of people in court, and I always think his attitude has affected my cousin. But, it doesn't make it any easier for me, knowing the explanation.

I agree. If the media were more forthright then a lot of kids who think hanging themselves is a romantic end would learn that it is really a rather horrible death. It just makes me so angry, the "cover up" to sanitize things that are horrible... Horrible things should be spoken of with the simplicity and truthfulness that any serious thing deserves. Pretense is good on the level of positive thinking, but at a certain point it stops being good and starts being bad... I mean, we want signs up to warn us where there is quick sand, so why don't we want warnings up about mental health issues? ("we" as a society)

About 6 weeks ago a 15 year old committed suicide in our school district. She went to my church and I knew her from there. She had so many friends, so popular and nobody knows what happened. She told her mom she was tired and went to bed early. Her mom found her the next morning, she had hung herself in the closet. Her obituary just said died at home.
It really hit me because these posters started going up all around the neighborhood. For some reason I can't post pictures so I have to do it this way. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...singPoster.jpg I thought of how Mark never made it to his graduation, his prom. I got in touch with the Contact support group and I asked if they needed any volunteers. I sent in my application to be a hopeline. I'm not sure if they will accept me but just maybe I can help one more kid make it to their prom.

(((Alffe))) thanks... Seven Pounds --the movie w/ Will SMith.... more shocking in many ways than "House" Tv show espisode . it is NOT "the pusuit of Happyness --same director ... very INtense, powerfull... but not 'easy' to watch and many may not be able to watch... Wil SMith brilliantlly conveys the depths of pain, suffering LOSSes more emotions.... issues....aspects of Suicide and DEATH but its also a LOVE story... Life and Death issues are touched -- chronic illnesses, domestic violence , elder care --the scenes in nursing home soo powerful-- deep complex movie... but it is a movie.... here many share their experiences.... Personal REAL stories of so many ...survivors, of fighting demons and seeking answers HOPE... sorry... losing my thought train now... Death... how when DEATH comes... into our lives... LIFE and Death issues... manifestations... affects... much that's been sitting heavily painfully thanks...ALL... for sharing, caring, more.. for this special place, family where can TALK about it and for ALL who are BLESSings |

I admit that I didn't see the movie 7 pounds. I was "scared off" by the warning from AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) but now I've changed my mind and I want to see it.
Thank you pono for making me rethink this and for sharing here when I know how difficult it must be.

I saw it.
Since you know that suicide is part of the movie, then it's not a shocker. This is Will Smith's best performance ever IMO. It touches on real human emotions. I don't want to give away good parts. I'm sure most has been on websites already. PM me if you want Alffe.

I haven't seen the movie, I am not sure I can just yet. I did not know the House episode would have a suicide or I don't think I would have seen it either. I love House, is my favorite TV show. I knew they formed the coalition and I knew they were working to bring suicide out of the darkness, but I did NOT expect one of the doctors to kill himself.
I was horrified that one of the cast member I have come to really like shot himself. When I saw the scene, I flashed back to Dad and just sat here sobbing and throwing up for all I was worth. What I liked about the episode, and the reason I kept watching after the inital shock, was the reactions of his family and friends. I related to every emotion expressed. I thought it great too, that they had Hugh Laurie -the leading star, be the one who went into denial. I remember this in my own family, people trying to find any other possibility that could have happened. My mom and step sister were there when he killed himself, it was all too clear there was NO other possibility! Yet, even faced with so much proof, I guess one just has to question. ((BJ)) how wonderful to see you dear friend ((Pono)) your posts always inspire me and give me strength

I don't think they should keep something triggering a secret, even if it's part of the plot. I didn't see the House episode. Just a minute or so when it was the funeral. They used poor judgement IMO.
7 pounds is a very moving love story. I woudn't reccomend anyone watch it that would be triggered.

I agree with you curious. I would have liked a warning! I read all kinds of interviews about this very thing. I can't remember word for word, but the gist of it was they were going for the shock. They wanted people to be stunned, because that is what happens in real life. You have no warning in real life, and they wanted the audience to feel that effect. I guess if I can put my bias aside, I can see their point.
Just wondering "out loud" here......I guess they don't warn the audience about shows dealing with someone dying by any other way, any disease that could trigger someone, like Alzheimer's triggers me. Hmmmmmm I guess part of bringing it out of the darkness, could be making it something openly discussed enough that it doesn't need a warning? I don't know, the shock value had a huge impact on many. Even in my small corner of the word, it certainly worked. I have had more people talk to me about Dad's suicide since the show aired. For that alone, I am grateful.

I had never seen the show House before Nikki gave us the link so I had no "feelings" for the dr. who completed suicide...nor for the "star" who grieved like a human being. I can't imagin subjecting myself to a professional who behaves like Dr.House but then I have to remind myself that it's TV. And if acting like a person with real feelings was a stretch for him then it must have some impact on a lot of people...that's a good thing.
What happened to his leg? Why is he such a B******.??? I prefer someone with the milk of humankindness rather than ice water in his veins...but then I'm old.
