Looking for helpful hints on relocating, the plan so far is south of Knoxville Tn, although Knoxville itself is an option. I would like to find some place within a few miles of I-75, shopping, city near by,low crime area.

Tips? Things to consider?

Tennessee is nice....I've been as far west as Memphis but I like the southeastern parts of the state better.

North Carolina (Asheville area) is really nice. So are the far northern parts of Gerogia (Blairsville, Dawsonville). The farther south you get (in GA) the more hot/humid it becomes. IMO, the best part of the U.S. is right around Asheville, NC. You get all four seasons but not an over abundance of any of it. If I could move anywhere that's where it'd be.

Are you moving yourself or are you going to hire a moving company to do it for you?

Maybe contact the Chamber of Commerce of the cities you're interested in and have them send you some info on the area.

Somewhere in N. Carolina....close to the mountains, would be my preference, too..

Things to consider for me would definitley be temperature changes. I am in a good location in Virginia because I live smack in the middle from Richmond, to DC, If I go east I have the beach and if I go west I have the mountains. But we also have hot summers and cold winters. I have never looked foward to the cold winters before.

Kitty, doing it myself. I just bought a 09 cargo van and a 12 covered utility trailer in June and every thing I plan on taking in the move should fit in them. Nothing much here I am particularly fond of and probably not worth moving. I can get new stuff when I find a destination.

Like to be near a city of at least 25,000 people, nothing rural, sidewalks, paved roads. Actually looked at some real estate websites in Asheville, but a bit farther from I-75 than I would like. Just need to keep an easy route open for north and south travel. I-77 puts me farther east than I would like.

I think I-75 goes straight into Chattanooga from GA. I've only been to the Aquarium in Chattanooga so I'm not sure what the other parts of the city are like. Probably like Atlanta.....you do not want to live in the city!

I was raised in the Western Carolina area, and WOW! I miss it. The Cherokee area is wonderful. Even towards Pigeon forge Tenn. That whole area is very nice. Asheville NC is wonderful, and has a ton of great shopping, services, and the medical care is great there as well. Hendersonville is quite crowded, and over run right now, but even south of there, like Saluda, or Columbus is quite nice. Very rural, while being close to ammenties.

Look up Western NC on line. Or check out the Tenn area on line. it will give you some idea as to whats out there. Make sure to check tax rates, and things like income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, and so forth. Do you need public transportation? would you like to be able to grab the bus? or would driving your car be what you want? Look at the real estate stuff on Realtor.com and see what stuff is selling for in your target cities.

I am so jealous! I would love to move back to the mountains, but the DH and his family are all here, so for now...we stay.

I love love love Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg/Sevierville area in Tennessee. Lots of tourist stuff but Knoxville is only a 45 minute trip away. It was in the 90's when we were there but you couldn't tell sitting up in the mountains.

legzzalot, thanks for that link! Beach? Just not my deal, no interest in anything Saltwater, freshwater lakes in an area would be more of an interest, but my ability to use them is questionable. Mountain areas have some great scenery, went thru them long ago on the way to Va. Beach.

Dejibo, I have been looking at Realtor.com now for a few months now, a good place to get ideas on homes in the price range you are looking for, and phone numbers of real estate agents to get more info on an area.

I can drive, some days? Driving before my road trip was limited to roughly 3000 miles a year. Public transportation? Not really able to stand, or sit around waiting at a bus stop. I rarely eat out, but nice to have places with to go menus near by. Not much interest in, or ability to go site seeing.

Just imagine as this progresses options on things to do will become more limited. Not really the direction I want to go, instead of a job move, a medical move, just need to get away from most of the snow and closer to town. Like 15 minutes from town now and 20-25 from medical care if I would need it in an emergency.

Taxes and stuff? Most states have a better tax structure than Ohio. LOL like it`s a privilege to live here?

Kitty I grew up in Cleveland Ohio, moved out first chance that came along. Not a city person, but nice to have a bigger city near by to get things you may not find in smaller cities. Nice quiet suburb would work for me.

3 out of 4 kids live here in Ohio, 2 with me, 1 not too far away, other in Rhode Island. I-71 to I-75 would make travel easier for them, an airport nearby easier for the other kid.

No telling if or when a kid might have to come and live with me, so jobs and stuff in the area would also be a plus. Much easier near a bigger city?
