My little netbook (an Acer Aspire One) just "recovered from a serious error".

I was trying to play a dvd on it to make sure it works with an optical drive (dvd drive) and every thing was going swimmingly until it locked up, and then I got the BSoD and it said something about the BIOS and that it was beginning a dump of physical memory.

It was also making a horrible grinding noise. (please tell me that was not the hard drive eating itself)

I rebooted, and it rebooted ok for the most part, but it said the "recovered from a serious error" thing, and now it's acting funky. So, I'm having it check the hard drive for errors and told it to fix anything that's funky.

I hope this isnt the little baby computer dying before it's a whole year old. (got it for Xmas last year)

Right now it's almost done with the CHKDSK scan...hopefully this was the right thing to do...boyfriend isnt online tonight (working) and he's my volunteer computer expert.

It's not like I dont have several (ok...four) other computers that I could use, but it seems like all my computers are acting funky...even my iMac keeps crashing.

I'm starting to get paranoid that there's a weird electrical or magnetic field in my house or neighborhood somewhere that keeps crashing my computers. At least it's a teeny tiny laptop and much easier to lug off to the Geek Squad or some other computer expert for fixing than my big monster of a Gateway desktop computer is.

The CHKDSK is taking fooooooooreeeeeveeer!!!

Anyone here know anything about computers, and am I doing the right thing (it was one of the suggestions that Microsoft gave me after I reported the crash)

DONT PANIC!

My lap top used to do that all the time. Its either a bad Hard Drive or the DVD player is bad. I am gonna put my money on the HD. they can replace the HD without having to replace anything else in the machine, OR you can get one at the store, and follow on line instructions. that Grinding noise is the processor trying to read information from the HD and it cant find it.


If you take it to a shop, they can install all your old information from your current HD onto the new one. Ususally done in less than a day.

Since its LESS than a year, most parts are covered by the MANUFACTURE warrenty. Look to the website, or ask the place that sold it to you.

it sucks when machines turn on ya, but now and again, things need to be replaced. When it happened to mine, there was no amount of virus scans, registry repair scans, or coddling that could coax it back to life. it simply needed to be replaced. I replaced it with an even bigger one, and had my info transferred. Hasnt made a peep in 3 years since.

Yesterday was a bad computer day for me. Night before DS ran Malware for me. Next day it was slow and kept crashing after I went to Jib Jab (I want to Elf myself) then a srceen saying HKDSK or something came up. It ran itself, everything seems ok today. I am sooooo low tech. If it doesn't fix it's self, need to rely on others.

Is it still under any warranty?

It really shouldn't be having issues so soon - do you have a full suite of anti virus , anti spyware on it with a good firewall?

I really would not go online anymore without complete protection.
I did the free AVG, free firewalls, free spy ware and about twice a year had major crashes with those.

most of those have a limited time trial - I tried about 6 of them before making my choice. You can choose multiple computer coverage & and multiple yrs.

Installed one used it until the time was up and then removed it and tried the next brand. Some I didn't care for the slow down on the computer or the user interface so those i removed right away.

I do have a warranty, not sure what it covers tho. My dad bought the netbook from Costco and it came with a warranty that's good for a couple of years.

I just talked to my boyfriend and told him what happened. He's going to check it for me the next time he's here. He thinks that my external dvd drive might have gone bad and that it bombed my netbook's system.

He said that I could still use the computer since I did the CHKDSK and it seems to be working now, but told me not to use the external drive in any of my computers. I guess I can wait to make copies of my video camera disks.

I do have free antivirus on it that my boyfriend told me to use when I had problems with Norton several years ago. (AVG Free, which was one of the higher rated antiviruses that my dad read about in a magazine review last week) never had a problem with that antivirus, it seems to actually catch the nasties before anything happens to my systems. (I use it on at least 2 of my computers) I used to use Norton, but Norton is a piece of junk. It crashed my Gateway computer a few years ago when I put Norton 360 on it. That's when I started using the free antivirus softwares. (I also get McAfee for free from the cable company that we get our internet access from. Use that in other computers)

So, according to boyfriend, I can still use my little netbook, but just have to be careful with it...no playing dvd's in it til he can check and make sure whether or not the BIOS needs updating. I had a BIOS problem with the netbook earlier this year (battery wouldnt charge, and wouldnt hold a charge)

I was having a problem getting the program that allows you to watch dvd's to work also. It keeps saying that I have to register the program, which I've already done. It doesnt seem to remember that I've registered it already. Totally weird. Oh well, I have computers with bigger screens that I can watch movies on, I just wanted to see what a dvd movie would look like on that teeny little screen...just in case I ever have to go do another IV drip...I took one of my big laptops last time I did that...want to take the lighter computer if I ever do that again.

I'm not planning on getting another IV drip of steroids anytime soon, but was just playing around with my computers last night since I was cleaning out my desks to get ready for moving them out of the room so I can get my new built-in desk installed soon. At least I can always use Hulu.com if I have to go anywhere with my netbook.


I guess I'll be asking my dad for one of those little portable dvd drives that I've seen advertised for using on a little netbook.

Comodo just came out with a free internet suite - they have had a high rated free firewall for ages now they added a more rounded protection.

If you take it places and go onto open wifi/hot spots , much better security & firewall is a good idea.
Are you using the standard Microsoft windows firewall?

If you surf the net a browser add on is a good idea too - like WOT {web of trust}
it will color code safe and not safe websites - so you know what ones not to click on.

I'd look into the warranty before spending any money to fix problems with the netbook. you might void it.
