I bought a couple of down throw blankets which, according to the catalog description, are "machine washable". Now that I have them, the tags say "machine washable in commercial washers". What would happen if I put them in my washer?

I think it's size. I have front loaders, they seem to handle stuff without going off balanced. I had a top loader large capacity that did well until kids loaded it off-balance too many times. My new washer (and most commercial washers)hey have no agitator but go round and round with clothes..

I've always washed all my goose down comforters but only once in my machine at home. It puffed way up and it caused the water to overflow when I did it in my machine so now I take them to the LaundryMat.
Love goose down!

B2Y, I have a couple of down throws that measure 50 x 60 that I keep on our recliners during the winter. I machine wash them at least 2 times each winter. I have had no problem washing them in my top loading machine. I just keep them punched down while the water fills. To dry them I put a couple of tennis balls in the dryer to help fluff them back out.
If the ones you have are queen size... a commercial washer and dryer would be best.

That's what they are, small recliner-size throws! I was just glaring at them, but it sounds like the world might not be coming to an end after all...
