I have enough trouble keeping up with the cleaning, laundry, etc., without adding another thing to clean...

If magnets stick to the stainless on your fridge, then it's not real stainless but the plastic facing that looks like stainless. (probably the way to go, might not be as expensive as the real stainless, easier to clean)

I actually dont like sticking magnets to the fridge. It always blows my mind when I see advertisements for houses with pictures and the seller has a magnet covered fridge with papers all over it.

If they're trying to sell, then the entire place should be cleaned up, including the front of the refrigerator. People cant imagine themselves in the house when there are pictures of strange people and report cards stuck to the fridge. (ok, I might want to get a real estate license, or at least learn how to stage houses)

Our house has brushed nickel everywhere in it, and I like the look of the brushed nickel, but I think if I do any remodeling for my parents (they seem to like my tastes) I might start switching out doorknobs for the white retro knobs like the ones in my grandmother's house. (altho, those are probably original to her 1880's house)

Or, I'd switch them out for the glass doorknobs. Always liked those, and now they have colored glass doorknobs. I'd do reds and blues probably, depending on the paint colors in the rooms.

I do like our current lever door handles. Easy for a numb hand to open a door with. It was also easy for my dog to open doors with his nose. (miss that dog)

I keep hoping that I'll win Powerball, because I want to give my aunt the money to modernize my grandmother's house. (aunt owns it now) It was built in the 1880s and is the oldest house in her neighborhood. It was actually moved a few miles from where it was built. I think it was moved in the mid-20s. My grandparents bought it in '41 or early '42 when my dad was a couple years old. (he can still remember the house they rented before they bought that house. Their first house was a bungalow)

I'd love to see it modernized, but try to refurbish all the original woodwork and re-do the wood floors. (they were carpeted in the 40's or 50's and grandparents used carpet glue...on the wood floors! eeek! saw it when my grandma re-carpeted in the late 80s) The house is starting to fall apart around my aunt now. Last time I was in it, the floor in the kitchen was sinking, her 80yr old bathroom sink fell off the wall last year. At least her toilet was fairly new. I remember when they upgraded from the old pull-chain toilet in the mid-70s to a modern flush toilet.

If we ever do sell this place (hope not), it will surely be as a fixer. I hope any prospective buyer at least says "it has good bones" or "I like the flow".

My range is kind of wheatish-white. Put it in when I built the house 21 years ago. It was a floor model, so I got a good deal. One of the burners is kaput, but I never use all four anyway.

The harvest gold fridge died about twelve years ago, so we went out to Sears and got the cheapest one. It's white, but textured so doesn't show every fingerprint. As if we'd care. When it dies, we'll go out to Sears and get the current cheapest one. Don't need an ice maker. It doesn't freeze the lettuce, so it's good.

And do not, repeat, do not buy any black shiny stove or fridge. Trust me on this. Unless you like cleaning it with degreaser and then using Windex and paper towels or what not over and over to shine it back to a somewhat normal look.

I can attest to this. My stove, fridge and dishwasher are all black.

Thanks for the advice. I always wanted black appliances (seriously but now I'm thinking otherwise!) but have all white except the microwave that's black (will replace it soon). Since the black appliances wouldn't go with our kitchen I want a new kitchen to go with the black - my DH wouldn't go for it though. Now I'll have to think of another appliance color to get that new kitchen.

I like the almond/beige colored stuff. it blends with any other color, isnt glaring when a speck of dust, or a finger print hits it, and is forgiving of stains. I chose my current black, because I got a heckofa deal. Couldnt pass it up. The fridge is textured, so it hides stuff well, but the stove is glass top, and WOW! we have to clean it everyday! We did have a white glass top that was just as bad to be honest. Mr. Clean magic erasers saved the day.

My contractor used almond colored toilets, and sinks, and tubs, but only put in single hung windows?! What a dope! We are going to have them all replaced in the spring. They stink!

btw, my big ol spa tub has a crack in it! I have had it repaired twice. They say all the extra water that is required to fill such a tub, places great pressure on the seamed areas. I want to rip it out and put in a big ol claw foot.

I went to a yard sale once and this lady in this swanky house was selling all her harvest gold appliances. I got a crock pot for about $1! I have used that thing for about 15 years!

I still have a harvest gold crock pot, and a daisy yellow push button big boy phone. If the power goes out, you need a plugged in phone to use, as the wireless stuff and the hand held things wont work when the power goes out.

I bet the harvest gold will come back into vogue! hehe

So far my favorite was the "wheat", sort of an ivory color.
