Default Stainless steel appliances?

So what's the big deal about stainless steel appliances? I mean, I like them okay, but we watch people on HGTV looking at houses and saying, "Oh man, no stainless steel appliances?" in the same tone of voice as you'd say "Oh man, no indoor plumbing?"

Somebody tell me what's so special about them, other than preference of appearance?

I wonder if they work better? I have a stainless steel convection oven. I need to take special care when I clean it - what a pain! It does work great though and cooks better than my regular oven for certain things. I think that's just because it's smaller but now that you ask why it's so important to have stainless steel appliances I wonder if that's why it cooks better. If not, then it's just because that is what's in. White appliances were in, then black, now stainless steel. Wonder when gold and avacado will make a come back.

Anyone with a serious answer?

I still have my avacodo. My turkey tastes the same no matter what color it's cooked in

I was wondering the exact same thing! I know they are a popular item but sheesh not buying a house because the kitchen has brand new white appliances instead just seems odd to me.

Then again I've always bought an ugly house so I could increase the value with renovations.

Nothing special except stainless steel is the 'in" color...current trend.

We are looking at buying new kitchen appliances and I am trying to figure out what color I prefer...stainless steel or white. I don't like black.

I am leaning towards white. I don't follow trends simply because I have to live with my choice long term.

Stainless steel is a pain to keep clean and I would not want it in my kitchen. It is the hot item for now in new houses, but it is still more of a hassle to keep clean than I would care to hassle daily.

I tend to not buy 'trendy' colors for big $ items. Simply because, I get things when I need them and not when I want them...."Was that my mother talking??"....Yes, only she used to say that about shoes! lol... So, the trendy color will definitely be out of fashion by the time I 'need' to replace it!

When my parents bought the house we're living in now (my parents are the first owners of this house) the builders had already installed the microwave and oven before we saw it, and they were both stainless steel.

So, when we went to buy a refrigerator, we got a stainless steel one just so it wouldnt look weird in the kitchen.

I like it, but that's probably just because I like silver as a color, and it'll go with whatever other colors we might put in the house later on if we re-do the tile or cabinetry someday.

I dont think the stainless is difficult to keep clean, but then, I learned how to clean stainless steel at one of my old jobs. (fast food restaurant) and that was one of my favorite cleaning jobs to do when I worked there. I used to strip off the old stainless cleaner with carbonated water and then re-polish it with the stainless cleaner. (you have to follow the grain of the metal)

We had a lot of stainless in that place. If we had a slow day or bad storm that killed business we ended up with a clean, shiny store because I'd get bored.

It irritated the heck out of me when my parents hired a cleaning company to do our house once a month and one day one of the cleaners they sent was cleaning the stainless wrong. She was scrubbing the stainless against the grain with one of those green scouring pads that you use on ovens and pans that have cooked on food. Scratched a big spot on the front of the fridge. (grrrr!!!!!) She did it to the microwave too. You can still see the scratch. Ticked me off to no end.

The only thing I dont like about stainless steel, is that you cant put magnets on it. They wont stick, but then again, if they did they'd probably scratch the heck out of the stainless. My mini fridge that I used to keep Copaxone in has a fake stainless steel front to it. You can stick magnets to it, and you dont have to use stainless cleaner on it to keep it shiny.

I love my stainless steel oven. It cooks better because burners get hotter (I love gas and cooking as much like a "Pro" as I can. I think it stays cleaner anfd looks better than my old white appliances which were not really old. Goes with everything I own. I love it.
