I think it's a good idea. A friend of mine on Facebook doesn't. What do you think? ~ Faith

Well, not sure I'd want to marry a man who had to declare poverty just to marry me.......
I think those who want to get married should at least be able to afford the legal documents for it. If they can't then their time might be better spent getting financially stable - then getting married.

I agree with Kelly. If you cannot afford the fee, then you probably should not be getting married.

If you can't afford the marriage license fee, then you won't be able to afford the higher taxes...

[Patton contends many people in the state don't marry because of the $69 marriage fee.]
what?? I really don't think that a 69 dollar fee is what keeps people from getting married. If that is the case surely friends or family would come up with the money for that part. {if they think the parties involved should be getting married } Kind of a waste of time for lawmakers to worry about this sort of thing IMHO. many more REAL problems to try to fix....

I'm pretty big on being self-sufficient and being able to afford the things you need and want. Getting married and having children are things that take responsibility and some level of financial stability, imo, whenerver possible.

Marriage is a HUGE commitment! HUGE! If you cant afford the first step towards it, then its time to rethink your plans. $69 can seem like an insurmountable challenge when you are in the poor lane, but to drag another into that lane with you?...I dunno.
I think you have bigger problems than wanting to get married if you cant save up for this one. Put aside $10 a month for 7 months. That is 2 generic packs of cigarettes per month. Like giving up ONE cigarette per day for each person wanting the license. I am NOT saying all poor folks smoke, but alot do. I find that many of my own poor relatives ALWAYS find the money for those things that are extra important to them. Cigarettes, a bus trip, a microwave, ...you get the idea. To start a marriage with your hand out for a freebie starts a bad foundation IMHO.
