Just for fun . . .
From 5th grade through high school I played the flute. I loved it and still have my open-holed flute. I haven't played it in years but still hold on to it in hopes of starting again. (Of course, it needs some minor adjusting and cleaning first.) Growing up we had a piano and organ. I never got the hang of it. Well, if I had lessons, I might have caught on but self-teaching did not work for me. Plus, 2 of my brothers played and played well and usually one was always at the piano. Two of my sisters played the organ and were usually at the organ and/or my brothers were playing the piano and the two instruments were in the same room. I would love to learn to play the piano as I think piano music is so beautiful. What musical instrument did/do you play and/or want to learn to play? |

We had a lot of music in our home but, it was by way of recordings. My great GMA had an old GrammaPhone, my Grandmother played the radio, night and day. My Mother loved all the big bands of the 30s, 40s and 50s.
We never had instruments, but I did take piano lessons in school and played the Kazoo, too.. ![]()

We always had some sort of music going on in our house too. My parents had all sorts of records - swing music was one of my favorites as well as Harry Belafonte, the Andrews Sisters, Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller, the Gershwins and other classical type music, Irish music, and the list goes on. Both my parents loved music and all 10 of us kids either played an instrument and/or sang in a choir at school and/or church. Many times, us kids would get together and all play our instrument together. I sometimes wonder how my parents put up with all those instruments and us learning to play them.

I played the piano. Took lessons for years (probably at least 7). Now, I have the old piano that my parents had when they got married. Both my sisters played it, too. I've tried hard to take care of it but it's old and needs tuning.
My nephew (the one with the little girl who had cancer) and his wife wanted to give their three children lessons but then Claire got sick and that idea had to go on the back burner. I promised them the piano whenever they could take it. Now that Claire is better they're making plans to come and get it. I'm glad to keep it in the family and let other children enjoy it as much as I did. ![]()

I re-read your post carefully, and noted that it did NOT say "which instruments do you play WELL", so:
Started playing clarinet when I was 9. It needs new cork and pads, but I can still play it. I have my Grandpa's old C-clarinet also. Guitar, plunking away with a repertoire of about 6 chords these days--might as well transpose everything to key of G. Can't sing well enough to accompany myself, so it doesn't matter what the range is! Harmonica Piano and Organ (no lessons, but taught myself to play after a fashion. I don't play classical music, but can manage hymn-style music, and can fake a melody line and chords) I played the organ in church for almost 30 years, and I fill in at the piano when the "real" pianist isn't there. I also have Mom's old pump organ.

Cool B2Y! You are quite talented!
My dad played the clarinet when he was younger. I never got the hang on that one. I tried the trumpet and French horn once as my brothers played. That didn't go well. I tried the violin. I think it must have been poison to my parents ears as they never encouraged me again on that one. ![]() I had no luck with the guitar either. So the fact that you can play all of those, whether well or not, is pretty amazing! ![]() ![]() |

What fond memories you brought back. I played the flute and piccolo and was fairly good, 4th chair out of 17, athough I don't have a lick of rhythm. Tried piano also and never got the hang of it. Perhaps my rhythm deficiet could not be compensated for when the hands needed to do something totally separate?

Took piano lessons for many years, know enough to make my way around a piano but not really make any beautiful music. My Mom either played the piano or organ at church. I loved the violin so my parents decided to start me with that. After my first lesson they were having a concert and asked me if I wanted to play. I decided then that they really didn't care waht I sounded like if they were going to have me play in a concert after only one lesson. Now I play the remote control for tV, radio, CD, DVR anything with a remote control.

I played the flute too! I started in the 5th grade and also played in 6th. I liked it, but I discovered choir and the piano and there was no turning back. I took piano lessons for 6 years, and my DM also took them for a short time. Our piano teacher came to our house for our lessons and since she was also a dental hygienist, she also cleaned our teeth on the living room couch! I still play piano now, but not very often. About six years ago, we moved our piano to the basement to make more room upstairs. Since we did that, I have hardly played.
My absolute favorite song to play on the piano is 'Amazing Grace', I could play it over and over again for hours and never get tired of it!
