He's a doll, Tricia! I know nothing about dogs except they're adorable when they're puppies. He's beautiful and will outgrow his puppy stage eventually. I hope she gets his diet straightened out soon and he's feeling better. Sometimes the shots and medications they receive as a puppy upset their GI tracts.

Plain canned pumpkin (not the pie mix) is great for poopyitis.

I've given this to cats for constipation. Is this one of those things that helps both conditions?

I also have heard of sweet potatoes doing the same thing. I haven't suggested this to DD21 yet. Which, btw . . .

I came over here this morning due to the a/c and we were going to work on some painting projects together today. I walk in and she's laying on a mat in the living room and "puppy" is bouncing all over the place. She said, "This is Elliot." Her friend had to be gone over night and all day today so she asked DD21 to watch her puppy - Riley's sister. I turn the lights on and DD21 looked awful. Elliot does not sleep and kept her up 1/2 the night. Riley was in the bedroom with DD21's bf.

When he came out it was full on play. Out of the two of them Elliot is more high energy than Riley. Elliot originally was this floppy kind of puppy that slept and slept and slept. You could move her around and she would just continue sleeping. It was actually funny. But, not anymore. OMGoodness! A while ago, DD21 asked me if I had the puppies under control because she needed to get some sleep. haha I've been here for a couple of hours and they are finally both napping and settled down. I've been wanting to get a dog myself but this is convincing me not to do it. Maybe if we got one already housebroken and trained that would work. Do they come that way? (DBF's old dog showed up at his house one day and never left. We couldn't find the owner after all sorts of advertising of a lost dog. He came housebroken and trained and was the best dog ever, very well behaved and obedient. He was a pit/chow/lab mix.)

Anyhow, Riley's "business" is firming up some. But if it continues to be this way, she needs to get him in. I did tell her this morning that if he has some sort of virus or parasite or something, Elliot could get it too. Elliot is the dog that was over here on Saturday or Sunday and ate the same food as Riley and ended up loose for a day or so afterward.

I agree with what was posted...introduce foods very slowly...a small bit every meal increasing each time as pup tolerates..
I did let Sonny out constantly when he first came home...and praised him and gave him a tiny treat only when he pottied outside. I don't subscribe to indoor training pads, as it then takes longer to outdoor train, IMHO...
Also try to exhaust puppy by playing with him outdoors...but make sure if you play tugging games that he NEVER wins. He cannot be the alpha male...the mortal is the boss!!
I also use a crate to train the puppy. It makes them feel safe to have a small space, and gives me a break from the puppiness. I still use it for my 9 month old when I go out, since he seems to play "puppy gone wild" when I leave

I had to crate TinyMonsters till he was about 3 or 4yrs old before I felt he was trustworthy to let him wander the house looking for sleeping spots while I was out.

When we moved when he was about 5yrs old, I thought I was going to have to crate him again, but he was pretty calm about it...even tho he'd been kept at a kennel for a few weeks while we were moving. (big mistake. Some sadist at the kennel nearly killed Tiny by beating him half to death) Tiny was traumatized when we got him back from the kennel, but he was fine not being crated once we got him home. I think he was just happy that he was home with me at that point.

My aunt crates her pug when she's at work. Stella stays in her crate and has no problem with it. As soon as my aunt gets home, Stella gets to go for her walk, and is with my aunt constantly from that point. Stella has a bad habit of doing things to drive my aunt nuts. My aunt takes a nap when she gets home from work. Usually with Stel laying next to her. One time my aunt woke up to find that the dog had decorated the house with toilet paper from all three bathrooms. She'd gone in and grabbed the end of the roll, and ran thru the living room and kitchen with the toilet paper. When she was done with that, she got some more paper from the front bathroom, and eventually made her way down to the basement bathroom and got paper from there too.

I think my aunt puts the paper on the counter where the dog cant get to it now. I swear, Stella is a devious practical joker and has a sense of humor.

Honestly, the only thing I know about cats is don't give themasprin. I've had dogs all of my 62 years. I gave Spookie( my diva) a little plain pumpkin and she liked it. She's a good girl and will eat most veggies. This pumkin idea came from the Maltese forum, they say it works. I'm learning about these toy breeds, fast. She is full grown and is 7#. I need to make sure she eats, they are prone to hypoglycemia.

But this doesn't sound like it's a problem for this pup. Please don't let him around other dogs till he finishes his shots. No pet store, dog parks etc.

Think about a rescued dog if you want one house trained?

Erin & Debbie - Those are pretty funny stories!

Aussie - DD21 called the vet today. She's bringing the puppy in tomorrow to get checked. They did say pumpkin was good for diarrhea but not in puppies. But DD21 said it was good to know and will remember that for when he is older. Also, I haven't been around a puppy since I was a kid. Well, a puppy in my house that was being trained. But, in a lot of ways, it is like having a little baby.

So, we're hoping all goes well tomorrow and he checks out just fine.

puppies are just like a little baby, but I think puppies are a heck of a lot more fun and cuter than babies are. (ok, I'm totally a dog person. Not a baby person. Given the choice between a puppy and a baby, I'd take the puppy)

I LOVE puppies! I'd love to have one, but I just dont have the energy to deal with a puppy. Neither do my parents. I may someday get another dog, but I'm not doing another puppy ever again. Too much work!

My aunt brought her pug across the street tonight so we could sit and swelter in the heat for a few minutes. Stella was all traumatized from her pedicure she had today. The groomer always says it's time for a rodeo when she clips Stella's nails. Takes four people to hold Stella down to do her nails. (she's a pug...and not a very big one either!) Reminds me of having to get four vet techs, the vet, and myself to hold down TinyMonsters to do his toenails...oh, and we muzzled Tiny just so we didnt have to worry about a glancing blow from a tooth as he squirmed. (He never bit anyone. The muzzle just told him we meant business. He was calmer with the muzzle on)

My aunt is mad at the girl who tried to clip Stella's nails before the regular groomer came running back in to do it. She said the girl who was trying to do the nails was about to hit Stella when the regular groomer came running in. Saved Stella from getting hit, and probably saved that girl's job. I told my aunt she should mention what she saw to the manager of the place, but she didnt want to. If that girl does that to anyone else's dog, I dont see her having that job for very long. Good thing Stella's regular groomer came back in.
