Default Flu preparedness.. have you thought about it?

I recently read a blog post http://afludiary.blogspot.com/2011/0...-flu-prep.html that got the old brain wheels turning about what I would do if I came down with the flu and I was home alone and not able to reach someone that could help. I know for me, just a high fever leaves me weak and unable to balance, much less walk well.

The person tells of living alone and getting sick with the flu. I know when my oldest son was 2 yrs old, I got sick really fast with a high fever one morning after my husband had left for work. I could not even lift my head, much less go take care of my son. Thankfully his first concern was watching Big Bird... and he knew how to turn on the TV. I was finally able to reach the bedside phone and call his dad to come home.

After reading the blog post, I thought about it and it would have helped to have had some fever reducer and liquids nearby.

Anyway, I thought maybe the blog post might have useful info for those of you that live alone or have small children in your household. One suggestion, if you do make that flu preparedness box and you have small children around...make sure it is childproof.

Good idea, TKTC. Imma gonna do it.
With 5 grand in school (germ city), I must be prepared, even though I've been lucky, so far.

I do some prep when they are coming to visit....I use my nasal spray, hand sanitizers and clorox wipes before and after they leave, but I don't have anything, except asprin, to take care of me, if I become ill.

I'm probably going to be getting my flu shot in the next few weeks.

Just had a sinus infection that felt like it was going to kill me. I dont think I'd do well with the flu if I get it this winter. I have a stash of tamiflu around here somewhere.

My dad has already asked my sister to stay home and keep the kids away from us if they get sick, which they've ignored because they've brought sniffly, snot dripping kids over a few times this year. My dad has a heart condition. I dont want him getting sick, and I sure as heck dont want to get sick because I dont want any flares of the MS to happen this winter. Hopefully they'll get the message and not bring sick kids over this year.

People who bring up their Vit D levels typically have much less upper respiratory infections and flu.

This was demonstrated in Japan, in high risk children.

We'll both be getting the shots, of course, and we're pretty careful about being in crowds when influenza is making the rounds. We use the hand sanitizer before and after we grocery shop, etc. Our family and friends know to stay away when they have colds (or heaven forbid, flu) because my husband has COPD.

I don't know if I've ever had the actual flu, and haven't had a cold in maybe ten years? Can't even remember. Even working at the Post Office, when people would come in, hack and sneeze into their hands, and then hand me money. Gack.

I’ll be getting a flu shot within the next couple of weeks. The last time I got the flu I promised myself that I’d do anything I could to make sure it never happened again. It is during flu season that being a semi-reclusive person is going to work in my favor. I have enough health problems without getting what ever is going around.
