Default Fungal meniginitis

I'm sure those of you in the US have heard of the fungal meningitis that people have gotten becasue of back injections for pain. My sister is one who got that medicine. A couple of days after the injection she had chills and bad headache. of course that could occur with other things. So she was notified by the hospital yesterday . Today they had quite a few people come in and had a large dedicated crew, doctors, lab staff, nurses, xray that did cat scan of brain, lots of lab work, EKG and spinal tap on everyone. Initially the spinal fluid looks clear and the culture of course will take a couple of days to grow. The hospital is of course picking up the tab for all of this. They are going to be out a big chunk of change. And if one of them comes out positive then it will be a really big chunk of change. For now my sister is relieved that the spinal fluid is OK. I don't think she realizes that she isn't out of the woods yet. I guess ignorance is bliss

Hope she doesnt end up with meningitis. It's not fun. My mom just got home today after 50+ days in the hospital for meningitis AND encephalitis from West Nile.

Hope your sister is going to be ok!

My sister is one of those people that if she didn't have bad luck she wouldn't have any luck at all. I think one thing complicating all of this is that I'm not sure how much she wants to live. For many years she made plans that if when she died that she wanted to donate her body to science. She has had fibromyalgia for years upon years with all the problems that go with it. About 5 years ago she developed cancer of the breast and had the double mastectomy with breast reconstruction. Not long later she developed MRSA and had to have one of the implants removed. So it took many surgeries to get all of that taken care of. She has my Moms joint and spinal problems so has always had pain. I guess one thing from way back is that her oldest child was always a rebel, crashed his first car in a drunken mess when he was in the 6th grade when he stole it and a bunch of his buddies went joy riding. She broke her foot leaving the house one night trying to find him after he opened his window to leave. She had numerous surgeries on that and it affected her knees and hips. He is an alcaholic but has been clean for years and is a good guy but it is like pulling teethe to get the two of them to talk. They will talk and be all normal at family functions but neither will call the other when there is something wrong.

So back to her breast cancer. She didn't want any treatment. She wanted to die. We convinced her to take chemo and she has been cancer free for 5 years now. But Mom dying really affected her. She says Mom was her best friend. She was tlaking about the fact that her heart was irregular the other day. I told her that it could be PVCs like all people have or soemthing more serious. her husband has atrial fibrillation so she knows all about that. She says she wouldn't mind having that because if she had a stroke it might take her 'home'.

She takes huge anounts of pain medicine for all of her orthopedic and fibro porblems. She adjusts them herself. If she is to take 1 Vaium three times a day she will take all three at bedtime. She takes three different kinds of sleeping pills. He doctor orders all these and is aware of what she takes and how she takes them. I insisted on going with her to her doctor and making her tell him how she takes them. He goes to the ame church she does and they sit there and talk for an hour about the Bible instead of her medical problems. So I am furious at both of them

So now this!!!!!! She didn't even tell her daughter. She told a friend at the YMCA. I told her that she HAD to call ehr daughter I know she won't call ehr son. I will ahve to call him just like all the other times I have talked to him.

Sorry I didn't mean to talk everyone's ear off. Just a lot fo things I need to get off my chest.

Last year people in the surrounding area were inform that at a local restruart they discovered one of the employee who worked in in the kitchen area had meningitis. All people who had eaten there were to get shots for it. Guess what my DH and I were ones who to go get one. Lucky for us we are ok.

I feel so bad--not only for the people already ill, but the possibly thousands who are at risk. Can you imagine being told you "might" develop a potentially fatal illness, and it might be weeks or even months before you know you're out of the woods? Given my personality, I'd go about three days not knowing, then have a heart attack.

I think I am more anxious than she is unless she is hiding it.
